Europe's story begins in the late 1970s in the Stockholm suburb of Upplands Väsby. The band went through a few names before settling on Europe, a choice that Tempest later said was simply because it sounded cool and represented a coming together.

Their big break came in 1982 when they entered the first-ever Rock-SM, a televised Swedish rock competition. They won, and the prize was a recording contract with Passion Records.
