Daft Punk are one of the most influential electronic acts of all time, known for their robot personas and genre-defining sound. As of their 2021 split, they left behind a legacy of four studio albums, a Grammy-winning live album, and a soundtrack for Tron: Legacy. Their music blended house, disco, funk, and pop into something unmistakably theirs. The duo rarely gave interviews or appeared unmasked, which only deepened the fascination around them.

Their final album Random Access Memories (2013) won Album of the Year at the Grammys and spawned the global smash Get Lucky, featuring Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers. Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo met in 1987 at a Paris secondary school, bonding over their love for music and cinema. In late 1991, Guy-Manuel posted a flyer at Danceteria, a Paris record store, looking for a guitarist. Laurent Brancowitz answered, and the three formed the indie rock band Darlin', named after the Beach Boys song. They recorded four tracks and played a handful of gigs. A British music critic dismissed their sound as daft punky thrash, and when Bangalter and de Homem-Christo continued as a duo, they adopted that phrase as their name.

In September 1993, the duo attended a rave at EuroDisney organized by DJ Nicky Holloway. There they met Stuart Macmillan of Slam, co-founder of the Scottish label Soma Quality Recordings. They handed him a demo tape, which led to their debut single The New Wave in 1994. Their first commercial success came with Da Funk in 1995, re-released by Virgin Records in 1996 with a Spike Jonze-directed video. Daft Punk never had an official fandom name, lightstick, or fan color. Their fanbase is informally known as the Daft Punk Army or the Robots. Fans are known for recreating the iconic robot helmets, attending shows in costume, and organizing tribute events. The name Daft Punk was inspired by a British music critic's dismissal of their earlier band Darlin's sound as daft punky thrash. Their robot helmets were designed by friends; they originally wore black bags over their heads and Halloween masks before settling on the robot look. Thomas Bangalter's father, Daniel Bangalter, was a songwriter and producer in the 1970s disco scene. Laurent Brancowitz, the third member of Darlin', later found fame as guitarist in the band Phoenix.
