    About

Boygenius stands as a celebrated indie rock supergroup, bringing together the distinct talents of Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus. Since their formation in 2018, they have captivated audiences with their collaborative spirit and shared songwriting prowess. Their debut studio album, The Record, released in 2023, achieved significant critical acclaim and commercial success, earning them three Grammy Awards and a Brit Award. The album, hailed as an "instant classic," not only topped charts in the UK, Ireland, and the Netherlands but also reached number four on the U.S. Billboard 200. Following this triumph, they released the EP The Rest in October 2023. The group is currently on hiatus, allowing each member to pursue their individual projects while fans eagerly anticipate their next collaboration.

    Formation Story

The genesis of boygenius was a happy accident, as Phoebe Bridgers described it. The three artists, already established solo acts, had developed friendships through mutual admiration and shared experiences on the indie music circuit. Both Dacus and Bridgers had previously opened for Baker on tour, fostering a connection that predated the band. The initial idea was simply to record a few songs to promote their joint tour dates. However, the synergy between Baker, Bridgers, and Dacus was so potent that the brief project quickly evolved into the concept of a full band. They entered the studio and, in just four days, recorded their self-titled debut EP, Boygenius, which was released in 2018. The EP's success paved the way for their first tour as a collective. Their subsequent studio album, The Record, was a more extended affair, with the trio spending a month in January 2022 at Shangri-La Studio in Malibu, California, honing their sound.

    Musical Style

Boygenius operates firmly within the indie rock landscape, drawing heavily from alternative singer-songwriter traditions and infused with elements of indie pop. Their debut EP, Boygenius, showcased a compelling blend of individual tracks from each member alongside shared harmonies, effectively highlighting their distinct vocal textures and songwriting philosophies. The sound is characterized by introspective lyrics, often exploring themes of love, loss, and personal struggle, delivered with a raw emotional honesty. Their 2023 album, The Record, expanded on this foundation, offering a diverse range of songs that move from deeply melancholic pieces like "Emily I'm Sorry" and "True Blue" to more upbeat, anthemic tracks such as "$20" and "Satanist." The production often emphasizes the interplay between the three artists' voices and instruments, creating a rich and layered sonic experience that feels both intimate and expansive.
