    About

Big Tymers is a hip hop duo consisting of Birdman and Mannie Fresh, both veterans of the New Orleans rap scene. As of 2025, the group is inactive as a recording act, though they reunited for a one-off single in 2018. Their music, defined by Mannie Fresh's melodic bounce production and Birdman's flashy persona, helped define the Cash Money sound of the late 1990s and early 2000s.

The duo released five studio albums, with their 2002 album Hood Rich reaching #1 on the Billboard 200, a first for Cash Money Records. Their highest-charting single, "Still Fly," peaked at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100. Millions of records sold during their active years, and their influence persists in southern hip hop.

Today, Birdman remains active as a label executive and performer, while Mannie Fresh continues producing and DJing, including a 2025 collaboration with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. Fans still celebrate their classic hits, which remain staples of Cash Money's legacy.

    Formation Story

Big Tymers came together in 1997 as a spin-off of the Cash Money Millionaires, the supergroup that showcased the label's roster. Birdman, who co-founded Cash Money Records with his brother Slim in 1991, wanted a project that would highlight his own persona as a wealthy mogul. He recruited the label's in-house producer Mannie Fresh to handle the music, and the duo was born.

Interestingly, rapper Bun B was originally considered for the group. Mannie Fresh revealed in a 2024 interview that Bun B was in the mix, but ultimately the duo settled on just the two of them. Bun B maintained a working relationship with Fresh and later appeared on three of the group's five albums.

Their debut album, How You Luv That, was released independently through Cash Money in 1997, followed by a reissue in 1998. The early sound was rooted in New Orleans bounce, with Fresh's signature synth-heavy beats and Birdman's laid-back, boastful delivery. The duo's big break came with I Got That Work in 2000, which featured the hit "Get Your Roll On" (peaking at #50 on the Hot 100) and brought them national attention.

The peak of their success arrived with Hood Rich in 2002, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, making it Cash Money's first chart-topping album. The single "Still Fly" became their biggest hit, reaching #11 on the Hot 100. Their final album, Big Money Heavyweight, dropped in 2003, but by then the group's momentum was slowing.

In 2005, Mannie Fresh left Cash Money Records amid financial disputes with Birdman and Slim, effectively ending the duo. They reunited briefly in 2018 for the song "Designer Caskets" on the Before Anythang soundtrack. In October 2025, Birdman participated in the Cash Money vs. No Limit Verzuz battle at ComplexCon, performing alongside Master P, Mia X, and Snoop Dogg.

    Musical Style

Big Tymers' music is a blend of Dirty South, pop rap, and bounce, reflecting their New Orleans roots. Mannie Fresh's production is the core of their sound: slinky, melody-rich beats with heavy bass and catchy synth lines. Tracks like "Get Your Roll On" and "Still Fly" exemplify this approach, with infectious hooks that made them radio-friendly while staying true to the bounce tradition.

Lyrically, the duo focused on wealth and extravagance, with Birdman's verses celebrating luxury cars, jewelry, and a lavish lifestyle. The aesthetic was captured in lines like "gator boots with the pimped-out Gucci suits" from "Still Fly." This persona was a deliberate contrast to the gritty street narratives of other Cash Money artists, offering a more aspirational, party-oriented sound.

Over time, their production evolved from the raw bounce of their debut to a more polished, commercial style, but the signature elements remained consistent. Their final album, Big Money Heavyweight, continued the formula, though it arrived as the golden era of Cash Money was winding down. The duo's music also incorporated guest appearances from labelmates like Juvenile and Lil Wayne, further enriching their sonic palette.
