About
AOA, short for Ace of Angels, is a South Korean girl group under FNC Entertainment. As of 2026, the group is inactive, with no official disbandment announced. The remaining members, Yuna, Hyejeong, and Dohwa, have pursued individual activities, while former members like Seolhyun have built successful acting careers.
Known for their sharp choreography and a string of hits in the mid-2010s, AOA peaked with songs like "Heart Attack" and "Miniskirt." Their music blended dance-pop with retro and synth elements, and they stood out for promoting both as a dance group and a live band through their sub-unit AOA Black.
Though the group hasn't released new music since 2019, their influence on K-pop's third generation remains. Their YouTube channel has amassed nearly a billion views, and their songs still appear in throwback playlists.
Formation Story
AOA came together under FNC Entertainment, a label better known for rock bands like CNBLUE and FTISLAND. The idea was ambitious: a girl group that could do both dance pop and live band performances. Trainees were recruited and trained in vocals, dance, and instruments, with some learning guitar, bass, and drums for the band unit.
The original eight members were Choa, Jimin, Yuna, Youkyung, Hyejeong, Mina, Seolhyun, and Dohwa. Each was assigned an angel concept, and the group's name, Ace of Angels, reflected the idea that each member was an ace with her own talent. Youkyung, the drummer, was a non-promoting member, meaning she didn't join dance stages or variety shows, making her a rare invisible figure in K-pop.
They debuted on July 16, 2012, with the single album Angel's Story and the lead track "Elvis." The song mixed dance-pop with a retro rock feel, hinting at their dual identity. The band unit, AOA Black, released "MOYA" in July 2013, giving the group a chance to showcase their instrumental skills.
Their early years were modest, but the shift in concept in 2014 changed everything. With "Miniskirt," they embraced a more mature, confident image, and the song became their breakthrough hit. The follow-up "Short Hair" solidified their momentum. By 2015, "Heart Attack" turned them into one of the biggest girl groups in Korea.

Musical Style
AOA's sound evolved noticeably over their career. They started with a retro-rock influenced dance-pop, as heard in "Elvis." The AOA Black sub-unit explored pop-rock with tracks like "MOYA."
Their breakthrough came with a shift to synth-heavy dance-pop. "Miniskirt" and "Short Hair" featured slick production and catchy hooks. "Like a Cat" and "Heart Attack" brought in tropical and EDM elements, making them summer anthems. "Heart Attack" especially stood out for its bright, infectious chorus and polished arrangement.
Later releases showed more range. "Good Luck" took a dramatic, orchestral-pop direction, while "Excuse Me" returned to a funk-infused sound. Their final Korean release, "Sorry," adopted a moody, contemporary R&B style, reflecting a more subdued image after Choa's departure. Throughout, their lyrics often centered on love, confidence, and independence.

Cultural Impact
AOA's impact on K-pop was most visible during 2014 to 2016. They were part of the third generation of girl groups that helped define the era's sound. "Heart Attack" became a defining hit of mid-2010s K-pop, and its success on streaming platforms set records for longevity on Melon's Top 100.
Beyond music, members like Seolhyun became fashion and beauty icons. Her work as an actress and model brought mainstream attention to the group. AOA's choreography, particularly the sharp moves in "Miniskirt" and "Heart Attack," set a standard for girl group performances.
Their AOA Black unit was a rarity in K-pop, showing that girl groups could play instruments live. That versatility helped broaden the scope of what a girl group could be.
Fandom Culture
Fans of AOA are called ELVIS, a nod to their debut single "Elvis." The name plays on the group's angel concept, with fans positioned as the "king" to their angels. The fandom was known for its passionate support during the group's peak years, organizing anniversary projects and fan events.
Since AOA never had an official lightstick, fans often used angel-themed accessories at concerts. The fandom celebrated the group's debut anniversary on July 16 each year. Despite the group's inactivity, ELVIS remains active online, keeping the group's legacy alive through streaming and social media.
