The genesis of Air Supply traces back to Melbourne, Australia, in 1975. Graham Russell, originally from Nottingham, England, had relocated to Australia in the early 1970s, seeking new opportunities. Meanwhile, Russell Hitchcock, a native of Melbourne, had been working steadily as a bank teller before his passion for music led him to pursue a different path. Their individual journeys converged when both auditioned for the Australian production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar. Both were successfully cast in the chorus, marking the fateful meeting that would change their lives.

During the rigorous rehearsals for the musical, which commenced in May 1975, Graham and Russell spent considerable time together backstage. It was there they serendipitously discovered an uncanny, natural harmony in their voices, recognizing an immediate and powerful chemistry. With the closing of Jesus Christ Superstar, the two decided to formally unite their musical talents, officially forming their duo on May 1, 1975. The distinctive name "Air Supply" came to Graham Russell after he heard a line in a song playing on the radio – "The air supply is running low" – a phrase that resonated with him and provided the perfect moniker for their new venture.

Their early career was a testament to their dedication, beginning with performances at intimate small venues across Melbourne. These initial gigs soon expanded into coveted opening slots for larger, touring artists, allowing them to refine their stage presence and sound while gradually cultivating a loyal local following.
