Overview
DC Comics launched the Green Lantern franchise in July 1940 with Alan Scott, a railroad worker who found a magical lantern containing the star of Oa. Created by Martin Nodell and Bill Finger, this initial iteration appeared in All-American Comics #16 before receiving its own title that ran for 38 issues until 1949.
The concept shifted to science fiction in October 1959 when John Broome and Gil Kane introduced Hal Jordan, a test pilot who inherited a ring from the dying alien Abin Sur. This Silver Age revival established the intergalactic peacekeeping force known as the Green Lantern Corps and moved the setting away from magic toward cosmic mythology centered on the Central Power Battery on Oa.
Geoff Johns revitalized the series with Volume 4 starting in 2005 after restoring Hal Jordan's heroism following the controversial Emerald Twilight event. His run included major storylines like Sinestro Corps War and Blackest Night, which expanded the emotional spectrum and solidified the franchise's modern status within the DC Universe.
