James Gordon is one of the few honest cops in Gotham City, a city rife with police corruption. He rose through the ranks from sergeant to lieutenant, refusing mob payoffs and earning a reputation as a man of integrity. By the time of The Dark Knight, he leads the Major Crimes Unit, working closely with Batman and District Attorney Harvey Dent to dismantle organized crime. [edit]

Gordon is stoic, moral, and pragmatic. He is wearied by Gotham's corruption but remains committed to justice. He is willing to bend rules and cooperate with a vigilante because the system alone cannot handle Gotham's crime. Gordon begins as a lieutenant running an effective campaign against the mob alongside Batman and Harvey Dent. After the Joker's attack, he fakes his own death to gain tactical advantage. The Joker's manipulation leads to Dent's transformation into Two-Face, who kidnaps Gordon's family. After Dent's death, Gordon agrees with Batman to cover up Dent's crimes, preserving his image as a hero. Gordon delivers the iconic speech about Batman being a silent guardian.
