Google DeepMind

Google DeepMind is a leading artificial intelligence research laboratory and a subsidiary of Alphabet, the parent company of Google. Founded in London in 2010 by Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg, and Mustafa Süleyman, it was acquired by Google in 2014 for approximately £400 million, a move that signaled Google's ambition to lead in AI. In April 2023, DeepMind merged with Google Brain, Google's internal AI research division, to form a unified entity called Google DeepMind, consolidating Alphabet's AI research under a single leadership structure. The merger aimed to accelerate AI development amid the rapid rise of generative AI and competition from OpenAI and Microsoft.

DeepMind built its reputation through a series of landmark achievements. In 2016, its program AlphaGo defeated world champion Lee Sedol in the ancient board game Go, a milestone long considered a grand challenge for AI. The lab later developed AlphaZero, a general-purpose system that mastered chess, Go, and shogi through self-play without human data. Beyond games, DeepMind made groundbreaking scientific contributions with AlphaFold, a system that predicts protein structures with atomic accuracy, solving a 50-year grand challenge in biology. AlphaFold2, released in 2021, has been used by over 2 million researchers globally. The lab also created WaveNet, a deep generative model for raw audio used in Google Assistant.

DeepMind plays a central role in developing advanced AI models for Google's products. It co-developed the Gemini family of multimodal AI models, which compete with OpenAI's GPT-4, and released Gemma, a family of lightweight open-source models for developers. DeepMind's applied AI has improved Google data center cooling efficiency by 40% and enhanced Google Search, YouTube recommendations, and Android battery optimization. The lab also spun out Isomorphic Labs in 2021 to apply AlphaFold to drug discovery. Despite its successes, DeepMind has faced controversies, including a 2017 data privacy violation involving NHS patient records, reports of high-pressure internal culture, and ethical concerns over military applications of its technology.[edit]
