    Overview

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were two unknown actors sharing a cramped Los Angeles apartment when they wrote a screenplay about a math prodigy from South Boston. They sold it to Miramax for $675,000, a then-record for first-time writers. The result was Good Will Hunting, a film that would launch both men into stardom and win Robin Williams his only Academy Award.

Damon plays Will Hunting, a janitor at MIT whose photographic memory lets him solve advanced mathematics problems left on hallway blackboards. Professor Gerald Lambeau (Stellan Skarsgård) discovers the janitor's gift and arranges a deal to keep Will out of jail: study math and attend therapy. Will burns through therapists until he meets Sean Maguire (Williams), a grief-stricken psychology professor who challenges Will's defenses. Their sessions form the emotional core of the film, as Sean forces Will to confront the trauma of an abusive foster childhood.

Gus Van Sant directed with a naturalistic eye, shooting on location in Boston and Cambridge. The script balances humor and heartbreak, with sharp dialogue that never feels written. Minnie Driver plays Skylar, a Harvard student who sees past Will's bravado. The film cost $10 million and grossed over $225 million worldwide, earning nine Oscar nominations including Best Picture. It won for Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor.

Will Hunting lives in South Boston with his best friends Chuckie Sullivan, Billy McBride, and Morgan O'Mally. He works as a janitor at MIT, a job that puts him near the world of academia he secretly masters through self-study. By night, he drinks beer, picks fights, and runs afoul of the law. But Will has a photographic memory and an extraordinary gift for mathematics, a talent he hides beneath a thick Boston accent and a chip on his shoulder.

Professor Gerald Lambeau, a Fields Medal-winning mathematician, posts an incredibly difficult problem on a hallway blackboard, challenging his graduate students. The problem is solved anonymously overnight. Lambeau posts an even harder problem, and again it is solved. He sets a trap and catches Will in the act, discovering that his janitor is a mathematical prodigy.

When Will gets into a violent altercation, he faces jail time. Lambeau intervenes, arranging a deal: Will must study mathematics under Lambeau's supervision and attend therapy sessions. Will agrees, but he systematically demolishes every therapist Lambeau sends his way with his sharp wit and psychological insight. In desperation, Lambeau reaches out to his college roommate, Sean Maguire, a grief-stricken psychology professor living in a modest South Boston home after the death of his wife.

Sean is unlike any therapist Will has encountered. When Will tries to dismiss him by dissecting a painting in Sean's office, Sean grabs him by the throat and forces him to confront the limits of book knowledge compared to lived experience. This confrontation becomes the foundation of their relationship, a reluctant, volatile, and ultimately transformative bond.

Meanwhile, Will meets Skylar, a brilliant British student at Harvard who is drawn to his raw intelligence and authenticity. Their romance forces Will to confront his deepest fears: abandonment, intimacy, and the terrifying prospect of leaving his familiar world behind. Chuckie, Will's best friend, delivers a powerful speech about wanting Will to be gone one day, to drive away from South Boston and never look back, because Will's gift is a once-in-a-lifetime ticket out.

The central conflict emerges: Will must choose between the safety of his working-class identity and the terrifying possibility of using his genius to its fullest. Lambeau wants Will to become a great mathematician; Sean wants Will to find happiness on his own terms; Skylar wants Will to trust her enough to be vulnerable; and Chuckie wants Will to leave him behind. Will's resistance to all of these reflects the deep scars of a childhood spent in foster care, where he was abused and abandoned repeatedly. The film builds toward Will's reckoning with his past and his future, a choice that will define the rest of his life.
