The track arrived as Specialty single 624 before appearing on his March album of the same name. John Marascalco and producer Robert "Bumps" Blackwell penned the song, though the recording history holds a curious twist. Blackwell initially produced a version by the Valiants that mimicked Richard's frantic tempo, releasing it in 1957 without securing the hit status.

When Little Richard finally dropped his explosive take, the music industry took notice immediately. His version climbed to number four on the US charts and reached number eight in Canada, cementing its place as one of his earliest massive successes. This energy transformed the song into a standard that hundreds of artists would eventually cover.
