Golden Globes

The Golden Globes, officially known as the Golden Globe Awards, honor outstanding work in film and television each year. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association created the awards in 1944 to recognize both American and international productions. Unlike the more formal Oscars, the Globes split many categories between drama and musical or comedy, which often leads to a broader mix of winners. Organizers screen hundreds of movies and shows before members vote on nominations and final winners. The Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association formed in 1943 when a group of Los Angeles based foreign journalists decided to pool their efforts during World War II. They held the first Golden Globe Awards on January 20 1944 at 20th Century Fox studios. The Song of Bernadette took home best picture that night. Early winners included Gregory Peck, Rosalind Russell, and director Elia Kazan. The following year the ceremony moved to the Beverly Hills Hotel where Going My Way claimed top honors.

In the mid 1940s the group settled on the now famous golden statuette design showing a globe balanced on a film reel. They reincorporated as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in 1955. The 1950s brought important changes such as separate drama and musical comedy categories in 1951 and the launch of the Cecil B. deMille Award in 1952. Television categories arrived in 1956 and national broadcasts began in the 1960s.

The Beverly Hilton became the main home for decades. The show expanded its reach as viewership grew and more international talent received recognition. By the 1990s the Globes had cemented their place as Hollywoods first major awards night of the year. The biggest crisis hit in 2021 when a Los Angeles Times investigation revealed the HFPA had no Black members and exposed ethical problems including paid trips and lack of transparency. Studios and stars boycotted the 2022 ceremony. NBC refused to air it. The fallout forced a complete overhaul. The HFPA dissolved its voting body in 2023 and Dick Clark Productions took over the awards as a for profit operation.
