Golden Axe
"Three warriors. One axe. A kingdom in ruins."
Overview
Players step into the boots of one of three distinct warriors to battle through the dark fantasy realm of Yuria in Golden Axe. This 1989 arcade release from Sega defined the side-scrolling beat 'em up genre with its fast-paced combat and memorable characters. The story centers on stopping Death Adder, a sorcerer who has seized power using the magical Golden Axe. Lead designer Makoto Uchida built upon his previous hit Altered Beast by creating a game that emphasized heavy melee attacks, magic spells, and riding mounts like giant eagles or tigers. The title arrived on the powerful Sega System 16B hardware before landing on home consoles such as the Sega Genesis, Master System, Amiga, and Commodore 64.
Critics praised the action immediately, noting how well it balanced difficulty with cooperative play for up to three players. That initial success launched a long-running franchise starting with Golden Axe II in 1991. The game's legacy endured through decades of ports and re-releases, proving its appeal transcended the original arcade cabinets.
Gameplay
The core loop involves traversing side-scrolling stages while dispatching hordes of enemies using swords, axes, kicks, and jumps. Players collect magic pots scattered across levels to cast spells like fireballs or lightning bolts. A defining feature allows characters to tame and ride giant beasts including eagles, tigers, and turtles. These mounts provide aerial mobility and devastating ground stomp attacks that clear groups of foes instantly. Combat requires managing both health and magic resources simultaneously to survive the increasingly difficult encounters.
Story
Sorcerer Death Adder commands the land of Yuria after seizing the legendary Golden Axe. He corrupts the populace and summons undead armies to enforce his rule. Three heroes emerge to challenge him: Gilius Thunderhead, Thyra, and Ax Battler. Each warrior possesses unique stats and weapons but shares the singular goal of reclaiming the axe and restoring order. The journey takes them through forests, deserts, and dungeons filled with dragons and skeletons before they confront the villain in his fortress.
