    Overview

Godzilla and Kong are back, but this time they're not fighting each other. In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, directed by Adam Wingard, the two titans must join forces against a hidden threat lurking beneath the Earth's surface. Rebecca Hall returns as Dr. Ilene Andrews, the Monarch scientist who studies the giant ape, while Brian Tyree Henry reprises his role as conspiracy podcaster Bernie Hayes. Newcomer Dan Stevens brings a spark as Trapper, a quirky veterinarian who tends to Kong. The film expands the MonsterVerse with a budget of $150 million, earning over $571 million worldwide. It's a loud, colorful action spectacle that leans into the absurdity of its premise, earning a 7.0 rating on IMDb. Wingard, who previously directed Godzilla vs. Kong, keeps the pace brisk and the destruction spectacular, balancing monster mayhem with human emotion.

The story takes place several years after the previous film. Kong now roams the Hollow Earth, while Godzilla patrols the surface. Jia, the last Iwi, experiences disturbing visions that point to a hidden civilization and a new enemy: the Skar King, a malevolent ape who wields a crystal whip and commands an army of Great Apes. The Skar King has enslaved the Iwi for generations and now threatens to breach the surface. Godzilla, sensing the danger, begins a global journey to absorb radiation and evolve into a more powerful form. The human team, including Ilene, Bernie, and Trapper, ventures into the Hollow Earth to uncover the truth behind Jia's visions and find a way to stop the Skar King.

The film was shot primarily at Village Roadshow Studios in Queensland, Australia, with additional location work in Hawaii and Southeast Asia. The Hollow Earth sequences used a massive LED volume wall, a technique popularized by The Mandalorian. Composer Tom Holkenborg, also known as Junkie XL, created a score blending orchestral and electronic elements, incorporating themes from Akira Ifukube's original Godzilla music. The soundtrack also features licensed songs like Guns N' Roses' Welcome to the Jungle and Bonnie Tyler's Holding Out for a Hero.

Years after the events of Godzilla vs. Kong, the world has learned to live alongside the Titans. Kong roams the vast caverns of the Hollow Earth, while Godzilla patrols the surface, maintaining order among the planet's monstrous inhabitants. Dr. Ilene Andrews continues her work as a Monarch scientist, studying Kong and caring for her adopted deaf daughter Jia, the last known member of the Iwi tribe. Jia shares a psychic connection with Kong and has been experiencing troubling visions and headaches, sensing something deeply wrong in the Hollow Earth.

Bernie Hayes, the conspiracy podcaster turned Monarch consultant, picks up strange energy readings that suggest something is stirring beneath the surface. Enter Trapper, an eccentric veterinarian who specializes in treating giant creatures, bringing a lighthearted touch to the team. He approaches Kong's medical needs with the casual confidence of someone treating a house pet, just on a much larger scale.

The central conflict emerges when Kong discovers a hidden region of the Hollow Earth where an ancient Iwi civilization still lives, ruled by a mysterious Queen who holds knowledge about the Titans' origins. This peaceful society is threatened by a terrifying new adversary: the Skar King, a scarred, malevolent ape-like Titan who commands an army of Great Apes and wields a crystal whip made from a dorsal fin bone. The Skar King has enslaved the Iwi for generations and now plans to escape the Hollow Earth and conquer the surface world.

Meanwhile, Godzilla senses the growing threat and begins a mysterious global journey. He absorbs radiation from nuclear power plants, fights other Titans to assert dominance, and undergoes a dramatic transformation, evolving into a pinkish, more powerful form. The film cuts between three main threads: Kong exploring the Hollow Earth and confronting the Skar King's forces, Godzilla powering up across the globe, and the human team venturing into the Hollow Earth to uncover the truth behind Jia's visions.

The humans discover that the Skar King once attempted to conquer the surface but was imprisoned by Godzilla's ancient ancestors. Now free, he poses an imminent threat. Kong, after a brutal first encounter where he is defeated and captured, must ally with Godzilla, his former rival. The two titans, initially reluctant and hostile, realize they must work together to stop the Skar King and his army before they breach the surface. The film builds toward an epic confrontation in Rio de Janeiro, where the final battle will determine the fate of both worlds.

    Critical Consensus

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire delivers exactly what fans expect loud, colorful monster mayhem but its thin plot and underdeveloped human characters prevent it from being anything more than a shallow, if occasionally entertaining, spectacle.
