God of War
"From Spartan warrior to father in exile, Kratos battles gods across mythologies."
Overview
God of War stands as one of Sony's flagship franchises. Sony Santa Monica Studio created the series that follows Kratos, a Spartan warrior who evolves from a vengeful demigod in Greek mythology to a haunted father navigating Norse realms. The games mix intense combat with puzzles and platforming while exploring themes of revenge, redemption, and family.
Early entries delivered fast paced hack and slash action with fixed cameras and spectacular boss fights against figures like Ares and Zeus. The 2018 soft reboot transformed the formula. It introduced an over the shoulder camera, gave Kratos the Leviathan Axe, and added RPG style progression. Atreus, his son, joins as a companion who fights alongside him and drives much of the emotional story.
The franchise has sold over 59 million copies by late 2022. Critics consistently praise its cinematic storytelling, character development, and evolving gameplay. God of War (2018) and its sequel Ragnarok collected numerous Game of the Year awards and set new standards for narrative driven action adventures.
Gameplay
The original God of War games focused on combo based melee combat using the Blades of Chaos. Players performed brutal finishers and quick time events during massive battles against gods and mythical creatures. Environmental puzzles required creative use of weapons and magic to progress.
Starting with the 2018 entry the series adopted a more deliberate style. Combat now centers on the Leviathan Axe that Kratos can throw and recall. The game added skill trees, armor upgrades, and companion mechanics with Atreus. Exploration takes place in larger interconnected realms with seamless transitions between story, combat, and puzzle sections. Later releases introduced realm travel, sleigh rides, and roguelite elements in the Valhalla DLC.
Story
In the Greek era Kratos serves the Olympian gods after they help him escape his nightmares. Athena tasks him with killing Ares who tricked him into murdering his own family. After becoming the new God of War, Kratos faces betrayal from Zeus and unleashes chaos across the Greek world in his quest for revenge.
The Norse saga begins years later. Kratos lives in hiding with his wife Faye and young son Atreus. Following Faye's death the pair set out to scatter her ashes from the highest peak in the Nine Realms. Their journey forces Kratos to confront his past while teaching Atreus control and preparing for the coming Ragnarok. The story spans realms like Midgard, Jotunheim, and Helheim and examines fatherhood, legacy, and breaking cycles of violence.
