August 17, 2001 marked the premiere of Mariah Carey's film Glitter in New York City. The soundtrack followed the next day on August 18, though retail availability was delayed until September 11 due to the terrorist attacks that occurred just days after the initial release. This project represented a sharp stylistic pivot from Carey's previous ballad-heavy work toward an '80s post-disco and funk aesthetic designed to match the movie's 1983 setting.

Carey assembled a diverse team of producers including Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, DJ Clue, and Clark Kent to craft a sound blending dance-pop, hip-hop, and contemporary R&B. The album notably features posthumous samples of Rick James, whose influence permeates the funk-driven tracks. Collaborations spanned across genres with Eminem on "Loverboy," Da Brat on "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life," Busta Rhymes on "I Know What You Want," Mýa on "After Tonight," and Joe and 98 Degrees on "Thank God I Found You." The standard edition contains 14 tracks with a total runtime of 58 minutes and 28 seconds.

Commercially, the album debuted at number seven on the US Billboard 200, marking Carey's lowest first-week sales at that time. Despite domestic struggles, the project reached number one in Greece, Japan, and South Korea. Lead single "Loverboy" featuring Eminem peaked at number two on the Hot 100, becoming her highest-charting single since 1997. Carey's contract with Virgin Records ended shortly after this release as the label bought out her $100 million deal.

Nearly twenty-five years later, retrospective views have softened significantly. Modern reviewers now praise the production quality and cite the record as a precursor to the late 2010s resurgence of '80s-inspired pop.
