Gintama: The Final

After two decades of chaos, the Yorozuya trio finally gets its big-screen send-off. Gintama: The Final hit Japanese theaters on January 8, 2021, wrapping up the anime saga based on Hideaki Sorachi's manga. Directed by Chizuru Miyawaki, who had helmed many of the show's later episodes, the film adapts the manga's "Gintama's Farewell" arc, the story Sorachi wrote as the series' true conclusion.

Now, Gintoki must face the consequences of that decision.

As the countdown to destruction begins, the film brings together an enormous cast of characters from the franchise's history. Allies and former enemies alike unite to reclaim Edo from Utsuro's tyranny. The former students of Shoyo, Gintoki, Takasugi Shinsuke, and Katsura Kotaro, each carry their own interpretation of their teacher's final wishes, and their conflicting ideals drive much of the conflict. Flashbacks to their shared past at Shoyo's school reveal the bonds that shaped them, while the present-day crisis forces them to reconcile with their mentor's legacy.

The narrative interweaves these flashbacks with the present-day battle, exploring themes of mentorship, legacy, and the bonds forged through shared suffering. The film features the return of virtually every major character, including members of the Shinsengumi, the Joui rebels, and various alien factions. The absurdist humor that defined the series remains intact, but the stakes are higher than ever, with the fate of Earth hanging in the balance.

As the film progresses, it becomes clear that the conflict with Utsuro is not just about stopping a villain, it's about the students coming to terms with their teacher's death and the complicated feelings they have for him.
