    Overview

Five years after the events of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the Spengler family has traded rural Oklahoma for the bustling streets of New York City. They've taken up residence in the iconic firehouse at 14 North Moore Street, the original Ghostbusters headquarters, and are running the ghost-catching business alongside the original team. But when a mysterious brass artifact surfaces, it threatens to unleash a frozen apocalypse that could plunge the world into a new Ice Age.

The film marks the directorial debut of Gil Kenan, who co-wrote the script with Jason Reitman, and brings together the new generation of ghost hunters with franchise veterans Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson. Kumail Nanjiani joins the cast as Nadeem, a fast-talking young man who stumbles upon the ancient artifact, while Patton Oswalt plays a historian specializing in occult artifacts. The story centers on Phoebe Spengler, played by Mckenna Grace, as she navigates teenage angst and her growing connection to the spectral world.

With a budget of $100 million, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire grossed over $201 million worldwide, becoming a modest box office success. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the performances of the young cast but criticized the overstuffed plot and heavy reliance on nostalgia. The audience score on Rotten Tomatoes sits at 82%, indicating strong fan approval.

The Spengler family has settled into the firehouse, but things are far from peaceful. Phoebe, now 15, chafes under her mother Callie's strict rules after a dangerous bust goes wrong. Grounded from ghostbusting, she spends her days in the basement, where she meets Melody, a ghostly teenager who seems friendly. Meanwhile, Trevor and his friend Lucky work at a paranormal research lab run by Lars, a skeptical British scientist.

The trouble begins when Nadeem brings an ancient brass orb to Ray Stantz's occult bookstore. Ray recognizes it as the Orb of Garraka, a containment device for a Bronze Age deity that commands an army of frozen spirits. He enlists historian Dr. Hubert Wartzki to help decipher the orb's origins. As strange ice storms plague the city, the Ghostbusters realize that Garraka's power grows with human fear. The orb begins to destabilize, and the team must work together to prevent a frozen apocalypse.

Phoebe's secret friendship with Melody deepens, and she learns that Melody has her own unfinished business as a ghost. Meanwhile, Ray discovers that the only way to stop Garraka is to destroy the orb, but doing so would release the deity. The team races against time as the ice storms intensify, freezing parts of Manhattan. In a desperate move, the Ghostbusters attempt to trap Garraka using a modified containment grid, but the plan fails, and Garraka breaks free.

The climax sees the entire team frozen solid by Garraka's death chill, leaving only Phoebe and Melody to face the deity. Phoebe realizes that Garraka's power is fueled by fear, and she devises a plan to use a positive emotional frequency to counter it. Melody sacrifices herself to channel the frequency, freeing the team. Together, they combine their proton packs to trap Garraka back in the orb, which is then secured in a hidden vault beneath the firehouse. The film ends with Phoebe reinstated as a full Ghostbuster and the team united, ready for whatever comes next.

    Critical Reception

    Critical Consensus

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire delivers nostalgic callbacks and charming performances from its young cast, but the overstuffed plot and reliance on franchise references undercut its attempts to forge a fresh identity, resulting in a sequel that feels more like a greatest-hits compilation than a bold new chapter.
