Ghostbusters: Afterlife

Thirty years after the original Ghostbusters saved New York, the franchise returns with a fresh face. Director Jason Reitman, son of original producer Ivan Reitman, helms Ghostbusters: Afterlife, a sequel that skips the bustle of Manhattan for the dusty plains of Oklahoma. Single mom Callie, played by Carrie Coon, moves her kids Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) into a rundown farmhouse left by her late father. The family soon realizes Grandpa had a secret past. Paul Rudd co-stars as Grooberson, a seismologist with a passion for local legends. With a budget of $75 million, the film grossed over $204 million worldwide. It blends fantasy, comedy, and adventure while tapping into deep nostalgia for the 1984 classic. Critics and audiences responded warmly, earning it a 7.3/10 rating from over 5,000 votes.

Filmed primarily in Alberta, Canada, the production built the farmhouse set from scratch near Drumheller. The Ecto-1 car was meticulously restored using original parts from the 1984 movie. Rob Simonsen composed the score, weaving new themes with Elmer Bernstein's classic cues. Callie Spengler is struggling. A single mother in her late thirties, she's just lost her job and is barely keeping a roof over her kids' heads. Then a lawyer calls: her estranged father, Egon, has died and left her a farmhouse in Summerville, Oklahoma. She packs up her teenage son Trevor and her younger daughter Phoebe and drives west, hoping for a fresh start.

The farmhouse is a wreck. Dust covers everything, the roof leaks, and the barn is full of rusted junk. But Phoebe digs deeper. She's a science whiz, always asking questions, and she finds a hidden lab beneath the floorboards. Inside are strange devices: a ghost trap, a proton pack, and a PKE meter that crackles with energy. She also discovers her grandfather's name on an old ID card: Egon Spengler, Ghostbuster.

Trevor, meanwhile, falls in with a local girl named Lucky and her friend Podcast, a kid who runs a paranormal podcast from his basement. Together they explore the town's weird history. Summerville sits on a mine that was closed decades ago after a cave-in. Locals whisper about earthquakes and strange lights. Podcast has recordings of ghostly voices from the mine.

Phoebe befriends Podcast and Lucky, and the three of them start investigating the farmhouse's secrets. They find Egon's old journals, filled with equations and warnings about something called Gozer. They also find the Ecto-1, a beat-up hearse with ghost-catching gear stashed in the back. With some tinkering, they get the car running and the proton pack working.

Strange events escalate. A ghostly figure appears in the barn, then vanishes. The ground shakes. At the local diner, a spectral entity made of green slime attacks the jukebox. Phoebe and her friends suit up and test the gear, catching the slime ghost in a trap. It's exhilarating. But they realize Egon wasn't just a kook. He was trying to stop something big from awakening in the mine.

Gary Grooberson, a seismologist and the kids' summer school teacher, notices the earthquake patterns don't make sense. He teams up with Phoebe, sharing his data. Together they piece together Egon's plan: he had built a containment system in the mine to trap a powerful entity, but the system is failing. The entity is Gozer, the Sumerian god of destruction, which the original Ghostbusters faced in 1984. Gozer's followers, a cult of worshippers, have been manipulating events to free their master.

As the tremors grow stronger, the town braces for something worse. Phoebe, Trevor, Podcast, and Lucky prepare to finish what Egon started. They load the Ecto-1 with traps and proton packs, ready to head into the mine.
