Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech, officially the Georgia Institute of Technology, is a public research university in Atlanta, Georgia, with a reputation for turning out engineers, scientists, and innovators. Founded on October 13, 1885, as the Georgia School of Technology, it was part of a post-Civil War push to industrialize the South. Today, it's the largest school in the University System of Georgia, with satellite campuses in Savannah and Metz, France, and a student body that tops 56,000.

The university started with a single degree in mechanical engineering, but by 1901 it had added electrical, civil, and chemical engineering. In 1948, it changed its name to reflect its growth from a trade school into a full-fledged technical institute and research university. Now organized into seven colleges and about 30 departments, Georgia Tech emphasizes science and technology, and its research awards have surpassed $1.4 billion. In fiscal year 2024, its economic impact on the state was $5.8 billion, the highest of any public institution in Georgia.

Athletics are a point of pride too. The Yellow Jackets field 15 NCAA Division I teams (eight men's, seven women's) and have claimed five national championships. As a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, Georgia Tech balances academic rigor with a competitive sports culture, all set against the backdrop of Atlanta's bustling tech scene. The rivalry with the University of Georgia, known as 'Clean Old-Fashioned Hate,' has defined the brand's cultural identity since the first football game in 1893, a 28-6 Tech victory. [edit]
