Genden Phuntsok

The record for Genden Phuntsok is short, because his international career is roughly one film old. What he has done is unusual: an actor with about a dozen regional credits, no drama school training, and no climbing experience was handed the lead in an Apple TV production about Tenzing Norgay, opposite Tom Hiddleston, and the reviews said he carried it. The Guardian's notice described a film that finally puts the Sherpa at the center of the story, and the performance at its heart came from a man who had spent two decades in Tibetan-language productions that never traveled beyond the region. That is not a trophy cabinet. It is a genuinely unlikely casting outcome, and for now it is the distinction that matters.
