Butler is widely celebrated as one of the most influential bassists and lyricists in heavy metal history. His lyrical work on Black Sabbath's classic albums helped establish the thematic vocabulary of the genre, exploring darkness, war, and the occult with a literary sophistication rare in rock music. Rolling Stone ranked him No. 9 on its list of the 100 Greatest Bassists in 2020, and NME placed him at No. 5. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Black Sabbath in 2006 and received an honorary Doctor of Music degree from the University of Birmingham in 2019. His 2023 autobiography Into the Void was praised for its candid account of his life and career.
