Gears of War
"Emerge from the darkness."
Overview
Epic Games' Gears of War, released in November 2006 for Xbox 360, redefined the third-person shooter genre with its emphasis on tactical cover-based combat. Set on the war-torn planet Sera, players control Marcus Fenix and his Delta Squad as they fight the monstrous Locust Horde, a subterranean enemy that has nearly wiped out humanity. The campaign supports both solo and two-player cooperative play, while the multiplayer mode pits up to eight players against each other in faction-based matches. A Windows port, developed with People Can Fly, followed in 2007.
The game was a critical and commercial juggernaut, selling over three million copies in ten weeks and becoming the fastest-selling game of 2006. It won more than 30 Game of the Year awards and is often cited as one of the greatest games ever made, largely for popularizing the cover system that became a staple of the genre. A remastered version, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, launched on Xbox One in 2015 and Windows in 2016, developed by The Coalition. In 2025, Gears of War: Reloaded arrived on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S, marking the series' debut on Steam and non-Xbox consoles.
The success of Gears of War spawned a franchise of sequels starting with Gears of War 2 in 2008, along with novels, comics, and a film adaptation in development.
Gameplay
Gears of War introduced a cover-based combat system that became the genre's gold standard. Players press against walls, pillars, and debris to avoid enemy fire, then pop out to shoot. The roadie run, a low sprint, adds a unique visual and tactical element. Weapons include the Lancer Assault Rifle with its chainsaw bayonet, the Gnasher Shotgun for close quarters, the Hammer of Dawn satellite laser, and the Torque Bow that fires explosive bolts. Downed enemies can be finished with curb stomps or other executions.
The active reload mechanic lets players time a button press for a damage boost or faster reload. The campaign supports two-player split-screen or online co-op. Multiplayer features 4v4 matches in modes like Warzone (no respawns), Execution (must finish downed enemies), Annex (king of the hill), and Assassination (protect your leader). The down-but-not-out system allows revives, adding strategic depth. The Windows version used Games for Windows Live, which faced criticism for instability.
Story
Fourteen years after Emergence Day, when the Locust Horde erupted from underground tunnels and killed a quarter of humanity, former COG soldier Marcus Fenix sits in a prison cell. His friend Dominic Santiago breaks him out, and they rejoin the Coalition of Ordered Governments. Assigned to Delta Squad alongside Augustus Cole and Damon Baird, Marcus's team must deploy the Lightmass Bomb, a weapon designed to destroy the Locust tunnels.
The squad fights through ruined cities like Jacinto and the Necropolis, battling Locust forces and the monstrous Corpser. They deploy the bomb, but General RAAM escapes. The final scene shows the Locust digging deeper, setting up the sequel. The story, while thin, grounds the action in a desperate struggle for survival.
