    About

The year was 1965, and the Florida Gators football team was wilting in the Gainesville heat. Players were losing up to 15 pounds per practice, collapsing from heat exhaustion, and struggling to finish games. Dr. Robert Cade, a kidney specialist at the University of Florida, watched this unfold and decided to do something about it. Along with researchers Dana Shires, H. James Free, and Alejandro de Quesada, Cade mixed water, sugar, salt, lemon juice, and a phosphate buffer in a lab. The concoction, tested first on the freshman team, then on the varsity squad, turned the Gators into second-half dominators. Word spread, and by 1967 the drink was sold nationwide under license to Stokely-Van Camp.

PepsiCo bought Quaker Oats for $13.4 billion in 2001, inheriting a brand that had already become synonymous with sports hydration. Gatorade now operates in over 80 countries and commands 61.6% of the U.S. sports drink market as of 2025. Its product line has grown far beyond the original Lemon-Lime: Gatorade Zero, G2, Gatorlyte, Gatorade Fit, and the Gx personalized hydration system all target different athlete needs. The brand's green bottle and lightning bolt logo, designed in 1973, remain among the most recognizable symbols in sports.

Gatorade's influence extends beyond beverages. The Gatorade Sports Science Institute, founded in 1985, conducts research on hydration and performance. The Gatorade Player of the Year award, also launched in 1985, honors top high school athletes. And the Gatorade Shower, dumping a cooler of the drink on a winning coach, became a sports tradition after the 1985 Chicago Bears popularized it. Despite controversies over sugar content and plastic waste, Gatorade continues to dominate, with global retail sales estimated at $8.5 billion in 2024.
