    Overview

Released alongside the 2009 film of the same name, X-Men Origins: Wolverine throws players into the brutal claws of everyone's favorite mutant. Developed primarily by Raven Software using Unreal Engine 3, the game spans multiple platforms including PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Windows, Wii, PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS, and PlayStation Portable. What sets this action-adventure apart is its uncensored violence on home consoles and PC, earning an Mature 17+ rating for the Uncaged Edition. Players can tear through enemies, heal from wounds, and unleash feral rage in a third-person brawler that feels more visceral than the movie it's based on.

The game's rating varied wildly across platforms. The Nintendo DS version received an Everyone 10+ rating thanks to its toned-down graphics, while the Wii, PlayStation 2, and PSP versions landed a Teen rating, matching the PG-13 film's superhero violence. Despite its commercial success, Activision's licensing deal with Marvel expired, and the game was pulled from digital storefronts on January 1, 2014. It remains the last standalone Wolverine game until Marvel's Wolverine from Insomniac Games hits the PlayStation 5.

Development was a race against time. The team at Raven Software worked from an unfinished film script, with scenes and character designs shifting constantly. They built a proprietary damage system that shows Wolverine's flesh tearing and regenerating in real time, a technical feat that still impresses. Hugh Jackman returned to voice the character, and the cast from the film recorded new dialogue for expanded story sequences. The result was a game many fans consider better than the movie, though it sold modestly at around 1.5 million copies worldwide.

    Gameplay

Combat in X-Men Origins: Wolverine is built around a combo-based melee system that emphasizes aggression. You chain light and heavy attacks, launch enemies into the air, and execute brutal finishing moves that dismember foes. The real-time damage system is the star of the show: as Wolverine takes hits, his skin rips open, exposing muscle and bone, then knits back together in seconds. This ties directly into the health regeneration mechanic, encouraging you to keep fighting rather than hide behind cover.

The Feral Rage meter fills as you deal damage. Once full, activating it boosts attack speed and damage, turning Wolverine into an unstoppable force. You can also grab enemies and use them as shields or throw them into environmental hazards. The game includes light platforming sections with wall-running and ledge-climbing, but the focus is squarely on combat. A skill point system lets you unlock new moves and upgrades by defeating enemies and collecting dog tags and action figures hidden throughout levels.

    Story

Logan's journey starts in 1845 Canada, where a young boy accidentally kills his father with bone claws that sprout from his hands. He flees with his half-brother Victor Creed, and the two spend decades fighting together, from the Civil War to Vietnam. After Logan refuses to execute a civilian in 1973, he parts ways with Victor and eventually volunteers for the Weapon X program. The game's extended escape sequence from the adamantium bonding facility is one of its best moments, showing Wolverine slaughtering soldiers in a blind rage.

Years later, Logan lives quietly in the Canadian Rockies with Kayla Silverfox. When Colonel William Stryker kidnaps her, Logan sets out for revenge. The game adds original bosses like the Wendigo, a giant mutant in the woods, and a heavily altered Deadpool with teleportation and optic blasts. The final confrontation with a mutated Sabretooth takes place at Stryker's facility, where Logan kills Stryker in a way that differs from the film's ending. Marc Guggenheim wrote the script, which expands on the movie's plot with new levels and character moments.
