    Overview

Respawn Entertainment, founded by former Call of Duty creators Vince Zampella and Jason West, launched its debut title Titanfall on March 11, 2014, for Xbox One and Windows. The Xbox 360 version followed on April 8, 2014, handled by Bluepoint Games. A multiplayer-only first-person shooter, Titanfall dropped a traditional campaign in favor of a narrative woven through online matches, set in a conflict between the corporate IMC and the Frontier Militia.

Gameplay hinges on two distinct modes: Pilots equipped with jump kits that enable wall-running, double-jumping, and parkour, and Titans, massive bipedal mechs called down from orbit. The flow between nimble Pilot combat and lumbering Titan battles defines the experience. AI-controlled grunts and spectres populate the maps, creating a sense of scale while keeping matches accessible. A Burn Card system offered single-use perks, adding tactical variety.

Built on a heavily modified Source engine, Titanfall targeted 60 frames per second on Xbox One and PC, with dynamic lighting and particle effects. The game sold over 1 million copies in its first week and drove early Xbox One adoption. It won Best Technology at the Game Developers Choice Awards and Best Multiplayer at the BAFTA Games Awards. Though criticized for limited content, 15 maps and no single-player, its movement system influenced later shooters like Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Black Ops 3.

    Gameplay

Matches pit two teams of six human players against each other, with AI grunts and spectres filling the battlefield. Pilots move with agility: wall-running, double-jumping, and sliding across vertical surfaces. After a cooldown, players can call down a Titan, a powerful mech with heavy weapons like chainguns and rockets. Pilots can rodeo enemy Titans by jumping on their backs, ripping out batteries or dealing damage. The loadout system limits weapons per class, and regenerating health encourages aggressive play. Burn Cards, earned through gameplay, grant temporary boosts like faster Titan cooldowns or enhanced mobility.

Game modes include Attrition (team deathmatch with AI), Hardpoint Domination (capture-and-hold), Capture the Flag, Last Titan Standing (no respawns, all start in Titans), and Pilot Hunter (only Pilot kills count). A progression system goes up to Gen 10, unlocking weapons, attachments, and Burn Cards. The matchmaking uses skill-based and party-based systems.

    Story

The narrative unfolds through pre-match briefings and in-game dialogue, set during the war between the Interstellar Manufacturing Corporation (IMC) and the Frontier Militia. The IMC exploits the Frontier's resources, while the Militia fights for independence. Players experience the conflict through multiplayer matches, with environmental storytelling and post-match cinemas. Key events include the Militia's assault on IMC facilities and the discovery of alien technology. The story is fragmented, leaving lore to be pieced together by the community.
