The Wolf Among Us 2
Overview
Six months after the events of the original game, Bigby Wolf returns to patrol the streets of Fabletown in this episodic graphic adventure. Snow has fallen hard on New York, and a new threat emerges from both inside and outside the hidden community of fairy tale refugees. Players again control the Big Bad Wolf turned sheriff, making dialogue choices and performing quick-time events that determine how the story unfolds. The game carries forward the noir aesthetic and moral complexity of its predecessor, with player decisions from the first game either imported or re-established through a new system.
The sequel has navigated an unusually turbulent development. After Telltale Games' original studio closed in 2018, LCG Entertainment acquired the brand and announced this project in December 2019. AdHoc Studio, founded by former Telltale employees including writer Pierre Shorette and director Nick Herman, joined as co-developer. A previous development team had already fully scripted an entire season before AdHoc took over, leading to substantial rewrites. The game was originally targeting Unreal Engine 4 but shifted to Unreal Engine 5 in 2022 to improve visual quality, supporting 4K resolution on current-generation consoles and high-end PCs.
Jared Emerson-Johnson returns to compose the score, continuing his work from the original game. The release has been delayed multiple times from an initial 2023 window to 2024 and then indefinitely. The team has stated they will not announce a specific date until the game is near completion. It remains confirmed for Windows, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One. No multiplayer or DLC plans have been announced.
Gameplay
The Wolf Among Us 2 follows Telltale's established adventure format: players guide Bigby Wolf through dialogue trees and timed choices that affect relationships and plot branches. Quick-time events punctuate action sequences, requiring button presses or directional inputs to succeed. The game presents itself as a cinematic experience, with camera angles and pacing designed to emphasize character moments and moral dilemmas. Exploration is limited to specific environments where players can examine objects and interact with characters. The choice system tracks major decisions, and at certain points the game displays statistics showing how other players chose, a feature carried over from the original.
Story
Set in the winter following the first game's climax, the story finds Bigby Wolf investigating a new threat that destabilizes Fabletown. The narrative draws on Bill Willingham's Fables comic series but tells an original tale. Themes of identity and redemption return, with Bigby struggling against his wolfish nature while protecting the community that fears him. The player's choices from the first game can be imported, or a new player can define key decisions at the start. The previous development team had completed a full season script before AdHoc Studio rewrote significant portions, restructuring episodes and character arcs. The game was originally conceived as five episodes, though the final structure has not been confirmed.
