Suikoden, released in 1995, is a role-playing game that broke from the genre's conventions by centering its entire design on recruitment. Players gather 108 characters, the Stars of Destiny, each with a unique backstory and role. The game's world is a 2D tapestry of towns, forests, and dungeons, with turn-based battles that reward strategic party composition. A standout feature is the Unite system, where specific pairs or trios unleash powerful combo attacks. Beyond standard combat, Suikoden introduces large-scale army battles, a rock-paper-scissors minigame, and tense one-on-one duels where reading an opponent's tells is key.

The narrative follows Tir McDohl, son of a revered general in the Scarlet Moon Empire. After his father is falsely accused of treason, Tir escapes and gradually unites a rebellion. The story draws heavily from the Chinese novel Water Margin, weaving themes of political corruption, loyalty, and the burden of power. Central to the plot are the True Runes, ancient artifacts that grant immense abilities and shape the world's fate. The game's emotional weight comes from its diverse cast: each recruit has a personal stake, and their fates intertwine as the rebellion marches toward the imperial capital.

Developed by Konami and directed by Yoshitaka Murayama, Suikoden was a critical success, praised for its depth and innovation. It has since become a cult classic, influencing later RPGs with its large-cast mechanic. The HD Remaster, released in 2025, modernizes the visuals and adds quality-of-life features while preserving the original's charm. A spiritual successor, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, was released in 2024, continuing Murayama's vision.[edit]

Exploration takes place on a top-down world map and in detailed 2D towns and dungeons. Battles are turn-based with up to six characters; positioning matters only for Unite attacks. The Unite system triggers when certain characters are in the party, performing a single powerful strike. Army battles pit your forces against the empire's in a simplified rock-paper-scissors format: infantry beats archers, archers beat cavalry, cavalry beats infantry. Duels require reading the opponent's stance and choosing Attack, Defense, or Special, a pattern-recognition minigame. Recruiting all 108 Stars of Destiny unlocks the best ending and fully upgrades your castle headquarters, which serves as a hub for shops, mini-games, and character interactions.[edit]

Tir McDohl lives a quiet life as the son of Teo McDohl, a general in the Scarlet Moon Empire. When his father is framed for treason by the corrupt Imperial Advisor, Tir is forced to flee with his friends. He stumbles upon a growing rebellion led by the Liberation Army and soon becomes its leader. The journey takes him across the land, recruiting warriors, mages, and misfits. The empire's ruler, Emperor Barbarossa, wields the Soul Eater Rune, a True Rune of immense power. As Tir gathers the 108 Stars of Destiny, he learns that the True Runes are sentient forces that shape history. The climax is a siege on the imperial capital, where Tir confronts Barbarossa and the truth behind his father's betrayal. The ending varies based on how many Stars were recruited: a full roster leads to a hopeful resolution, while missing even one results in a bittersweet finale.[edit]
