    Overview

School Days is a Japanese visual novel that trades static sprites for full-motion animation, effectively playing like a choose-your-own-adventure anime. Released by developer 0verflow on April 28, 2005, for Windows, it follows Makoto Ito, a first-year high school student whose second term unravels as he juggles feelings for two girls: the shy Kotonoha Katsura and the outgoing Sekai Saionji. Players influence the story through a dialogue system that branches into over 20 endings, ranging from romantic to shockingly violent. The game was fully voiced and used pre-rendered 2D cutscenes, a technically ambitious approach for a visual novel in 2005.

0verflow announced the project in October 2004, marketing its cinematic style. After launch, the game sold over 100,000 copies by 2007, spawning a multimedia franchise. A manga adaptation ran in Kadokawa Shoten's Comp Ace magazine, collected into two volumes, plus anthologies, light novels, and art books. Audio dramas and music albums followed. An anime television series, two OVAs, and a concert film were produced. The TV finale was famously pulled from broadcast due to its violent content, replaced by a serene boat ride video, which birthed the enduring internet meme known as "Nice Boat."

Ports arrived on PlayStation 2 in 2008 and PSP in 2010, the former removing adult content and adding new endings including a true ending. A remastered version, School Days HQ, launched in October 2010 with 1280x720 resolution and was localized in North America by JAST USA in June 2012. The original game was pulled from sale after April 2011, making physical copies collector's items. Sequels and spin-offs include Summer Days (2006), Cross Days (2010), and Island Days (2014) for Nintendo 3DS.

    Gameplay

School Days presents its story as an animated series, using full-motion video cutscenes instead of static character sprites. The game is fully voiced, a rarity at its time. Players make choices from a list of conversation topics or actions during specific moments, which affect hidden affection meters for each heroine. The "School Life" system tracks the protagonist's location and actions over a three-month period, leading to one of over 20 endings. These range from wholesome romantic conclusions to infamous "Bad Ends" featuring graphic violence. The game uses a proprietary engine designed to handle extensive video playback and branching dialogue.

    Story

Makoto Ito, a first-year student at Sakakino Academy, develops a crush on Kotonoha Katsura, the quiet girl who sits next to him on the train. With help from his outgoing classmate Sekai Saionji, he tries to get closer to Kotonoha. But as he grows close to both girls, his relationships become toxic. Makoto's indecisiveness and selfish behavior fuel a love triangle that spirals into jealousy, betrayal, and psychological breakdown. The narrative is famous for its shocking violent endings, including the "Nice Boat" ending, where the consequences of the characters' actions are fatal.
