Saints Row 2
"Rebuild the Saints. Own Stilwater."
Overview
Five years after waking from a coma, you return to Stilwater to find the 3rd Street Saints scattered and their territory claimed by three rival gangs: The Ronin, The Brotherhood, and The Morningstar. A corrupt corporation called Myriad pulls the strings behind the city's chaos, forcing you to rebuild your crew from scratch while reclaiming turf through street wars and brutal combat. This sequel expands the sandbox significantly, offering a map over 50% larger than the original with diverse districts ranging from industrial zones to wealthy suburbs.
Volition doubled down on satire and player freedom to distinguish this title from the gritty realism of Grand Theft Auto IV. The game features over 40 unique weapons, extensive character customization options, and a Respect system that unlocks new missions as you dominate the streets. A standout feature allows friends to join your campaign via two-player online co-op at any time, turning story missions into chaotic cooperative experiences.
The PC port released in January 2009 faced severe criticism for performance issues and bugs, a reputation that lasted nearly two decades until recent updates. Despite technical hurdles on Windows, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions received praise for their humor and open-world design. By September 2010, the franchise had sold 3.4 million units, cementing its status as a cult classic before moving toward even more absurd tones in future entries.
Gameplay
Players navigate the sprawling island of Stilwater using a variety of vehicles including cars, boats, and helicopters. Combat relies on a mix of firearms, melee attacks, and explosives, supported by a gang loyalty system where players can call in backup during firefights. The Respect meter tracks progress, granting access to better gear and story content as players complete side activities like drag racing, strip poker, and taxi driving.
Story
After surviving a betrayal-induced coma, the protagonist awakens to a fractured organization and a city under siege by organized crime and corporate manipulation. The narrative arc focuses on dismantling the influence of Myriad while defeating the leaders of the Ronin, Brotherhood, and Morningstar gangs. Key moments include storming the Myriad headquarters and executing a final assault that restores the Saints' control over Stilwater.
