Overview
Rocket League is a 2015 vehicular soccer video game developed and published by Psyonix. A sequel to 2008's Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, the game puts players in control of rocket-powered cars to hit a giant ball into the opponent's goal. Matches are typically five minutes long, with overtime if tied. Players can boost, jump, flip, and perform aerial maneuvers, with boost pads scattered across the arena for refueling. The game includes single-player and multiplayer modes, both local and online, with full cross-platform play.
Psyonix began formal development around 2013, focusing on refining the gameplay based on criticism and fan feedback from the predecessor. They also emphasized social media marketing and promotions to avoid the marketing shortcomings of the earlier title. Rocket League first released on PlayStation 4 and Windows in July 2015, with ports for Xbox One and Nintendo Switch arriving later. Physical retail versions for PS4 and Xbox One were distributed by 505 Games and later Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Versions for macOS and Linux came in 2016, but online service support for those platforms was dropped in 2020. The game became free-to-play in 2020 after Epic Games acquired Psyonix.
Rocket League was praised for its tight controls, addictive gameplay, and presentation. It holds high scores on Metacritic across all platforms and won numerous awards, including Best Sports/Racing Game at The Game Awards 2015 and Best Multiplayer Game at the Game Developers Choice Awards. By early 2018, it had sold over 10 million copies and attracted more than 40 million players. After going free-to-play, the player base surged to over 75 million by 2021. The game also became a major esport, with the Rocket League Championship Series (RLCS) offering prize pools exceeding $6 million total by 2023.
Gameplay
Rocket League is a vehicular soccer game where up to eight players split into two teams of up to four. Each player controls a rocket-powered car and tries to hit a large ball into the opponent's goal. Standard matches run for five minutes, with overtime if the score is tied. Players can boost by collecting boost pads on the field, enabling faster speeds, jumps, and aerial maneuvers. The game features a variety of modes: standard soccer, ice hockey (Snow Day), basketball (Hoops), gridiron football with power-ups (Rumble), and a destructible floor mode (Dropshot). Competitive ranked playlists use a skill-based matchmaking system. The physics engine allows for complex ball trajectories and car collisions, though some early criticism pointed to occasional unpredictable behavior.
