Overview
Valve released Portal 2 on April 19, 2011, expanding the first-person puzzle formula established by its predecessor. Players control Chell as she navigates the decaying Aperture Science Enrichment Center, a facility that has fallen into ruin three centuries after the original events. The narrative shifts from sterile testing chambers to a post-apocalyptic setting where the protagonist must escape the clutches of the reassembled supercomputer GLaDOS and the bumbling personality core Wheatley.
The game introduces new environmental mechanics alongside the signature portal gun. Users can apply Repulsion Gel to bounce across gaps, Propagation Gel to extend portal lifespans, and Conversion Gel to place portals on previously impossible surfaces. Light bridges allow players to create solid paths out of hard-light energy, while laser cubes and relays enable complex circuitry puzzles. A dedicated cooperative mode features two robots, Atlas and P-Body, solving synchronized challenges in a separate timeline where the facility remains operational.
Development involved a team led by Erik Wolpaw and Chet Faliszek, with music composed by Mike Morasky. Valve promoted the launch through an alternate reality game titled Potato Sack, which engaged independent developers to uncover release clues. While Electronic Arts handled retail distribution for consoles, the title remained primarily a digital experience on Steam. It later gained compatibility with the Steam Frame device in June 2026 and received a browser port in August 2026.
Gameplay
The core loop involves navigating test chambers using the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device. This tool creates linked entry and exit points on light-colored surfaces, allowing instant travel between distant locations. New additions include gel systems that alter physics: blue Repulsion Gel increases velocity upon contact, orange Propagation Gel extends portal duration, and white Conversion Gel enables portal placement on standard materials. Players also manipulate hard-light bridges and redirect lasers using reflective cubes and relay stations to power machinery.
A unique feature is the inclusion of turrets that can be deactivated or turned friendly to assist the player. The single-player campaign concludes with Chell escaping the collapsing facility after defeating GLaDOS. Cooperative gameplay requires two users to coordinate actions simultaneously, utilizing shared portals and synchronized timing to solve puzzles designed specifically for dual operators.
Story
The narrative begins roughly 300 years after the original game when Chell wakes from cryo-storage inside the ruined Aperture Science facility. Wheatley, a personality core who seized control following the destruction of GLaDOS, frees her but proves incompetent at managing the crumbling infrastructure. As Chell ascends through the abandoned sectors, she regains memories of past tests while the environment deteriorates around her.
The story relies heavily on voice acting, with Stephen Merchant providing the voice of Wheatley and J.K. Simmons voicing Cave Johnson, the company founder whose recorded messages appear throughout the facility. In 2026, Simmons noted this role as his favorite video game performance and expressed interest in adapting the character for film or theater. The plot transitions from dark comedy to survival horror as GLaDOS returns, reconstructed from scattered components, leading to a final confrontation within the facility's depths.
