Development on Physint began in the summer of 2025, immediately following the release of Death Stranding 2. The project started under Sony Interactive Entertainment but faced a sudden crisis when PlayStation Studios issued an unexpected cancellation notice in June 2026. Just months later, Microsoft stepped in to save the title. On September 9, 2026, Xbox Game Studios officially announced they would publish the game, expanding their partnership with Kojima Productions which already covers the upcoming title OD.

The game serves as a spiritual successor to the Metal Gear series, abandoning the sci-fi isolation of recent works for grounded action-espionage mechanics. Its title combines "physical" and "intelligence," hinting at systems that rely on environmental manipulation rather than digital interfaces.
