Parasite Eve
"Mitochondria have their own DNA."
Overview
Aya Brea stands in the crowded opera house as a concert celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Mithra Project reaches its peak. A woman named Eve triggers spontaneous human combustion, incinerating the audience before vanishing into the chaos. Aya survives an attack from a creature born within her own cells, awakening powers that mirror Eve's ability to manipulate biological energy.
The narrative spans six days in late December 1997 as Aya hunts the killer while uncovering a conspiracy involving mitochondrial evolution and time manipulation. Dr. Julian Lander plans to wipe out humanity to create a new species led by Eve, who seeks to become the Mother of this evolutionary line. The story explores genetic determinism through the conflict between nuclear DNA and mitochondrial DNA.
Square released the game on March 29, 1998, for the Sony PlayStation as their first title rated Mature. Produced by Hironobu Sakaguchi and directed by Takashi Tokita, the project blended real-time exploration with a turn-based combat system. Players pause action to select moves based on speed stats, creating a hybrid experience distinct from pure action or traditional RPGs.
Gameplay
Players control Aya Brea in a third-person perspective moving through linear environments in real-time. Combat initiates when enemies are detected, pausing the game to allow selection of actions like Attack, Magic, Item, or Defend. This turn order depends on character speed stats, requiring strategic planning without halting movement entirely.
Aya utilizes Mitochondrial Energy (ME) to cast spells and perform special attacks. ME regenerates slowly over time or can be restored using items found during exploration. Defeating enemies grants experience points that level up attributes such as Strength, Vitality, Intelligence, and Agility.
The system includes item synthesis where players combine collected supplies to create powerful equipment or healing items. Boss battles demand specific strategies involving dodging patterns and careful management of energy resources rather than simple attrition.
Story
The Metropolitan Opera House serves as the opening scene where Eve kills the audience during a gala for the Mithra Project. Aya Brea, a rookie police officer and daughter of Dr. Edward Brea, survives an assault by a mitochondria-born creature that grants her similar abilities.
Over the following week, Aya tracks Eve while investigating the connection between the genetic research initiative and the attacks. She discovers that Eve intends to trigger a global event to eliminate current humanity and establish a new species driven by mitochondrial evolution.
The climax involves a confrontation where Aya must overcome Eve's plan to become the Mother of this new line. The resolution addresses themes of genetic determinism and the struggle between nuclear and mitochondrial DNA.
