Nintendo Switch Lite
"A dedicated handheld console for portable play"
Overview
Nintendo launched the Switch Lite on September 20, 2019, as a specialized device designed exclusively for handheld gaming. The console features an integrated unibody design where the controls are permanently attached to the system, removing the detachable Joy-Con controllers found on the standard model. This structural change allowed Nintendo to reduce the weight to approximately 275 grams and shrink the overall dimensions to 82mm x 97mm x 13.9mm. The device runs on the same NVIDIA Tegra X1 processor and offers identical processing power to the original Switch, though it lacks the HDMI output necessary for TV mode.
Users can access the entire library of Nintendo Switch titles that support handheld mode, including Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. However, games requiring motion controls or HD Rumble may have limited functionality unless played with external Pro Controllers via Bluetooth. Titles that strictly depend on detached Joy-Cons for local multiplayer, such as 1-2-Switch, remain incompatible without purchasing additional wireless controllers separately.
Commercially, the device has proven highly successful since its debut. By 2026, it remained one of the best-selling handheld consoles globally, contributing significantly to the broader Switch ecosystem. Despite the anticipation of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, the Lite maintained a strong market presence in regions where the higher price point of new hardware makes the affordable option more attractive.
Gameplay
The system operates using a 5.5-inch capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 1280x720 pixels and 300 nits brightness. Internal storage consists of 32GB of flash memory, which users can expand via microSDXC cards up to 2TB. Battery life ranges from 3 to 7 hours depending on the software being played, powered by a 1310 mAh lithium-ion battery. The device includes built-in stereo speakers and a standard headphone jack for audio output.
Connectivity options include Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g/n/ac) and Bluetooth 4.1. While the hardware supports all Nintendo Switch OS features, the lack of video output means the console functions solely as a portable unit. Local multiplayer is possible through System Link or by connecting multiple consoles wirelessly, but split-screen gameplay requires separate Joy-Con controllers purchased individually.
