Nintendo DSi
"The handheld that swapped the GBA slot for cameras and a digital store."
Overview
Released in Japan on November 1, 2008, the Nintendo DSi arrived as the third major iteration of the popular DS family. It marked a distinct shift in strategy by removing the Game Boy Advance cartridge slot to achieve a thinner profile and install two built-in cameras. This hardware change prioritized portability and user personalization over backward compatibility with older physical media. The device launched globally in early 2009, offering families unique profiles to customize their consoles and encouraging multiple units per household.
Nintendo introduced the DSi Shop alongside the hardware, creating a dedicated channel for downloading games, applications, and themes directly to the system's internal memory or SD cards. The DSi Browser allowed users to surf the web, while new software like Flipnote Studio leveraged the front-facing camera for video chat and creative animation. These features positioned the console as a gateway to digital gaming long before smartphones dominated the market.
Gameplay
The experience centered on the foldable dual-screen design featuring two 3.25-inch LCD displays, which were slightly larger than the 3.0-inch screens found on the Nintendo DS Lite. Users interacted primarily through the touch-sensitive lower screen using the included stylus, supplemented by motion sensors and a built-in microphone. The removal of the GBA slot meant players could only run standard DS game cards and digital downloads from the DSi Shop.
Unique software experiences defined the era, such as Nintendogs + Cats which utilized the front camera for pet interaction, and Mii Maker for creating avatars shareable across devices. The system supported up to 16 MB of RAM and 128 MB of internal flash storage, expandable via SD cards up to 32 GB. Battery life ranged from 14 to 17 hours depending on usage intensity.
Story
As a hardware platform rather than a specific title, the Nintendo DSi does not feature a narrative plot. Its cultural story unfolds through the ecosystem of titles it hosted, ranging from puzzle adventures like Professor Layton and entries in the Mario & Luigi series to creative tools like Flipnote Studio. These applications offered their own narratives, but the DSi itself functioned as the medium through which these stories were experienced.
