    Overview

Released on September 26, 2024, Mouthwashing thrust players into the claustrophobic hold of the cargo ship Tulpar. Swedish developer Wrong Organ crafted a tense sci-fi horror experience where the crew faces a grim reality after a mysterious crash leaves them stranded in deep space. Supplies dwindle while paranoia spreads through the vessel, fueled by the presence of the captain who survives but remains maimed, mute, and immobile. The rest of the crew blames him for the disaster, creating a volatile atmosphere where trust evaporates faster than oxygen.

The narrative unfolds through the eyes of Jimmy, a character whose physical condition forces him to communicate via text logs and gestures rather than speech. This unique constraint drives the gameplay loop as players navigate dialogue trees and environmental puzzles that reveal the toxic history between Jimmy and his crewmates, particularly the young engineer Curly. What begins as a survival story quickly spirals into an exploration of gaslighting, abuse, and the fragility of sanity when isolation strips away social norms.

Critical Reflex published the title after Wrong Organ self-funded the initial development phase. The game utilizes a custom engine designed to render low-poly environments with heavy emphasis on lighting and texture to create a grimy, oppressive visual style. While it launched exclusively on PC via Steam, the studio later announced a console port scheduled for October 29, 2026, bringing the experience to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, and Nintendo Switch.

    Gameplay

Mouthwashing operates as a linear narrative experience rather than a combat-focused survival game. Players explore the cramped, low-poly corridors of the Tulpar, interacting with objects and solving minor environmental puzzles to advance the plot. The core mechanic involves reading text logs and listening to audio recordings that provide context for the crumbling relationships among the crew.

Dialogue systems allow players to influence the tone of interactions, though choices often feel weighted by the inevitable descent into madness. The game relies heavily on sound design and unsettling NPC behavior to generate tension instead of traditional jump scares. A unique element involves managing the player's perception of reality as the line between Jimmy's manipulative lies and actual events becomes increasingly blurred.

    Story

Jimmy sits alone in the wreckage of the Tulpar, unable to speak or move his limbs. He watches as the remaining crew members argue over dwindling supplies and the cause of their crash. Text logs appear on screen as he types out his thoughts, often twisting the truth to shift blame onto others or manipulate emotions. Curly, the young engineer, becomes the primary target of these psychological games as the crew turns against one another.

The mystery deepens as players uncover details about the crash that suggest Jimmy might have been responsible, or perhaps he is merely a victim of circumstances beyond his control. The narrative structure keeps the player guessing about the reliability of every interaction until the final moments recontextualize the entire journey. Themes of guilt and the destructive power of unchecked toxicity drive the emotional weight of the ending.
