Minecraft
Overview
Minecraft is a sandbox game developed by the Swedish company Mojang Studios. Markus Persson, known as Notch, created the original Java version, first released as a public alpha on May 17, 2009. The game officially launched on November 18, 2011, for PC. Jens Bergensten later took over as lead developer. In November 2014, Microsoft acquired Mojang and the Minecraft IP for $2.5 billion. Today, Xbox Game Studios publishes the Bedrock Edition, while Mojang handles the Java Edition. Sony Interactive Entertainment publishes on PlayStation platforms.
Players explore a procedurally generated world made of blocks, gathering resources, crafting tools, building structures, and fighting hostile mobs like zombies, skeletons, and creepers. The game offers multiple modes: Survival (manage health and hunger), Creative (unlimited resources and flight), Adventure (custom maps), Hardcore (permadeath), and Spectator. Multiplayer allows cooperation or competition on servers or private worlds. The community creates mods, maps, skins, and texture packs, adding endless variety.
Minecraft has sold over 350 million copies, making it the best-selling game ever. It has over 140 million monthly active players. The game has won numerous awards, including the BAFTA for Best Family & Social Game and induction into the World Video Game Hall of Fame. Its cultural impact includes viral YouTube videos, educational use, and spin-offs like Minecraft: Story Mode, Minecraft Dungeons, and Minecraft Legends. A film adaptation, A Minecraft Movie, released in 2025, became the third highest-grossing video game film.
Gameplay
Minecraft's core loop involves mining blocks and crafting items. Players start with nothing, punch trees for wood, and build tools to gather stone, iron, gold, and diamonds. They must manage hunger and health, fend off hostile mobs at night, and explore caves, oceans, and the Nether. Redstone circuitry allows complex logic gates and contraptions. The game uses a voxel-based world with dynamic lighting, water and lava physics, and entity behavior. The Java Edition runs on LWJGL, while Bedrock uses a C++ engine for cross-platform performance.
Story
Minecraft has no traditional narrative. Players set their own goals. In Survival mode, a loose progression leads to The End dimension, where they defeat the Ender Dragon. Upon victory, the credits roll with a poem by Julian Gough. That is the closest thing to a story. The game encourages player-driven storytelling through exploration, building, and emergent events.
