    Overview

Capcom released Mega Man Battle Network for the Game Boy Advance on March 21, 2001, shifting the franchise away from side-scrolling platformers. The game places players in a near-future society where the internet permeates daily life. Eleven-year-old Lan Hikari navigates the physical world while controlling his digital partner, MegaMan.EXE, within cyberspace to combat computer viruses and the criminal group WWW.

Battles occur in real-time on a six-by-six grid, emphasizing strategy over reflexes. Players cannot move their avatar directly during combat but instead issue commands using Battle Chips. These chips represent attacks or defenses and are drawn from a custom deck known as a Folder. The system borrowed heavily from the collectible card game trend of the early 2000s, requiring careful management of CPU power costs for each chip.

The original title sold approximately 1.2 million copies by 2003. Critics highlighted the unique combat mechanics and presentation, though some noted the narrative lagged behind the gameplay loop. In December 2022, Capcom compiled all ten classic entries into the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection, releasing it on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam with modern features like save states and online multiplayer.

    Gameplay

Combat takes place on a static six-by-six grid where positioning dictates success. Players control MegaMan.EXE by selecting commands from a menu rather than moving him freely. Each command consumes CPU power, forcing users to balance offensive output with defensive capabilities. The system relies on a deck-building mechanic where players construct Folders containing specific Battle Chips before entering a battle.

Exploration happens in two distinct modes. In the real world, Lan moves through town maps to find hidden items and advance the plot. Entering the network shifts the perspective to the digital grid where battles occur. This structure encouraged players to optimize their folders based on upcoming challenges and enemy types.

    Story

Lan Hikari lives in the 21st century alongside his NetNavi, MegaMan.EXE. Users project these avatars into cyberspace to operate networked devices. When viruses or rogue programs threaten the system, MegaMan.EXE enters the network to neutralize the threat. The primary antagonist is WWW, a criminal organization seeking to exploit the digital infrastructure.

The narrative spans six main titles that introduce new conflicts involving the Zenny virus and antagonists linked to Dr. Wily. Later entries like Axess and Stream expand the scope to include larger conspiracies and the mysterious Z virus. The core theme remains the bond between human operator and digital partner as they work together to maintain order.
