Max Payne

In 2001, Remedy Entertainment unleashed Max Payne, a third-person shooter that redefined narrative in video games. The game drops you into the rain-slicked streets of New York City, where former detective Max Payne hunts the killers of his wife and child. His investigation leads into a dark conspiracy involving a designer drug called Valkyr, a corrupt pharmaceutical company, and secret societies. The story unfolds through graphic novel panels and voice-overs, drawing from hard-boiled detective fiction and Norse mythology. The gameplay, inspired by Hong Kong action cinema and John Woo's films, introduced bullet time to gaming, letting players dodge gunfire in slow motion. This mechanic, popularized by The Matrix, became the game's signature.

Originally released for Windows by Gathering of Developers in July 2001, Max Payne later hit PlayStation 2 and Xbox in December 2001, with ports by Rockstar Canada and Neo Software. A Game Boy Advance version by Möbius Entertainment offered an isometric view but kept the core action. Enhanced mobile ports arrived in 2012, and the game has since been re-released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S through backward compatibility. A Dreamcast version was canceled when the console was discontinued.

Critics praised the game's stylish gunplay and noir storytelling, though some noted linear levels and a short campaign. Max Payne sold 4 million copies and won a BAFTA for Best PC Game of 2001. It spawned two sequels: Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne (2003) and Max Payne 3 (2012), plus a loose 2008 film adaptation. The core of Max Payne is its third-person gunplay, where players wield pistols, shotguns, submachine guns, and grenades. The signature mechanic is Bullet Time, a slow-motion effect that lets Max dodge bullets while maintaining aim. This is paired with Shootdodge, a dive that triggers Bullet Time upon landing. Health is restored via painkillers, replacing traditional health packs. The game includes surreal dream sequences that require platforming across floating platforms, representing Max's psychological trauma. The campaign is divided into three acts: The American Dream, A Cold Day in Hell, and A Bit Closer to Heaven, with linear levels set in various New York locations. Three years after the murder of his wife Michelle and daughter Rose by drug addicts, former NYPD detective Max Payne works undercover for the DEA, investigating the Valkyr drug ring. His partner Alex Balder is killed, and Max is framed for the murder. Going rogue, he uncovers a conspiracy involving the Aesir Corporation, a secret society called the Inner Circle, and a super-soldier serum named Valkyr, derived from Project Valhalla. Characters are named after Norse gods: Balder, Odin, Loki. The plot culminates in a betrayal by his friend Vladimir Lem, a member of the Inner Circle. Max kills crime boss Nicole Horne, and in the final scene observes a new Valkyr factory, leaving his future ambiguous. The story is told through graphic novel panels and voice-over narration.[edit]
