Mario Kart World
"Race beyond the finish line."
Overview
Mario Kart World, released on June 5, 2025, is the latest kart racing game from Nintendo EPD, available exclusively on the Nintendo Switch 2. This entry breaks from tradition by introducing an open-world design, where players can freely explore interconnected tracks and environments. The core gameplay remains familiar, players control iconic Mario characters in high-speed races, but now includes off-roading mechanics, an elimination mode, and unlockable costumes. Races support up to 24 players, double the previous limit, adding chaotic multiplayer action.
Development began in 2017 for the original Nintendo Switch, shortly after Mario Kart 8 Deluxe launched. The team felt they had perfected standard racing, so they shifted focus to open-world elements, eventually naming the project Mario Kart World instead of Mario Kart 9. By 2020, hardware limitations forced a move to the more powerful Switch 2. The soundtrack, led by Atsuko Asahi, features over 200 tracks, including rearranged classics from the Mario franchise.
As a launch title for the Switch 2, Mario Kart World became the console's best-selling game, moving 14.7 million copies. Critics praised its gameplay innovations and open-world freedom, though some design choices drew mixed reactions. Overall, it stands as a bold evolution for the series.
Gameplay
Mario Kart World shifts from closed circuits to a seamless open world where all courses connect via drivable roads. Players can race on traditional tracks, explore freely, or enter Free Roam mode to drive with friends and snap photos at scenic spots. The Knockout Tour mode is a continuous elimination race across the entire world: racers below a placement threshold at checkpoints get eliminated until one remains. Grand Prix pits four connected courses in a points-based competition.
New mechanics include off-roading segments, boat racing on water, rail grinding, wall jumping, and wall riding. Items like the Super Horn and Boomerang Flower return alongside new ones such as the Goo-Goo Buggy. Each of the 50 playable characters has a unique special item, and 24 characters have alternate costumes unlocked by eating food items found on tracks. Races support up to 24 players, doubling the previous maximum, with 4-player local split-screen and online multiplayer.
Story
Mario Kart World does not have a traditional story mode. Instead, its open world is presented as a vibrant, interconnected Mushroom Kingdom where races happen naturally. The game's world includes iconic locations like Toad Harbor, Bowser's Castle, and Rainbow Road, all seamlessly connected. Brief cutscenes introduce each Grand Prix cup, showing characters preparing for a race, but there is no overarching plot or narrative campaign.
