Mafia II

Mafia II drops you into the polished wingtips of Vito Scaletta, a Sicilian-American war vet returning to the fictional city of Empire Bay in 1945. Developed by 2K Czech and published by 2K, this third-person action-adventure game hit Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 on August 24, 2010. It's a standalone sequel to the 2002 original, trading the 1930s for a post-war setting that spans six years. Vito's goal: pay off his father's debts and climb the ranks of the local Mafia families. But power struggles and shifting loyalties make that a bloody proposition.

You explore Empire Bay on foot or by car, with a wanted system that scales police aggression based on your criminal antics. The game earned positive reviews for its strong narrative, memorable characters, and solid gunplay. Critics did knock its restrictive open world, which lacked the interactive sandbox freedoms of contemporaries like Grand Theft Auto. Development kicked off in 2003, right after the first Mafia shipped. A Director's Cut bundled all DLC arrived in December 2011 from Feral Interactive on Mac.

A sequel, Mafia III, came in 2016 from Hangar 13. Then in May 2020, 2K released Mafia II: Definitive Edition, a remaster co-developed by d3t and Hangar 13, to mixed reviews. This version later appeared in the Mafia: Trilogy bundle that September. Characters from this game also appear as younger versions in the prequel Mafia: The Old Country, released in August 2025.[edit]

Missions drive everything. You drive to a location, shoot some people, maybe tail a car, then watch a cutscene. Empire Bay is a gorgeous diorama of 1940s and 50s Americana, but it's mostly window dressing. There are a few collectibles: scattered Playboy magazines and wanted posters. You can buy new suits and upgrade weapons at the docks, but there's no mini-games, no properties to buy, no real side activities. The police system is strict: speed too fast, run a red light, or pull out a gun in public, and cops come after you. Their response escalates from a fine to a full shootout. Combat is cover-based, with a satisfying punch to the shotguns and Tommy guns. You can also melee with fists or a knife. The driving physics lean toward heavy, arcade-style handling, with period cars that feel distinct. Gas stations let you refuel, but it's more flavor than necessity. Vito Scaletta returns from World War II to Empire Bay, only to find his father dead and his mother drowning in debt. He reunites with his childhood buddy Joe Barbaro, a hot-headed schemer who pulls him into the underworld. Together they do small-time jobs for the local mob, quickly catching the attention of the Falcone family. Vito's rise is steady: he becomes a made man, gets married, buys a nice house. But a power struggle with the rival Vinci family and a betrayal lands him in prison for two years. After release, he works directly for Leo Galante, a powerful underboss. The climax sees Vito and Joe gunning down the heads of both families, only for Joe to be taken away by Galante's men in the final scene. Vito is left alone, his fate uncertain. The narrative spans 1945 to 1951, with each chapter marked by a change in season or year.[edit]
