    Overview

Life Is Strange is an episodic graphic adventure game from Dontnod Entertainment, published by Square Enix. It launched across five episodes throughout 2015 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, with later ports to macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. The story follows Max Caulfield, an 18-year-old photography student at Blackwell Academy in the fictional Oregon town of Arcadia Bay. After discovering she can rewind time, Max uses her power to investigate the disappearance of fellow student Rachel Amber and to prevent a series of tragic events affecting the women around her. Gameplay blends exploration, conversation choices, and environmental puzzles, with a branching narrative that reacts to player decisions. The rewind mechanic lets you undo choices and try different paths, creating a sense of consequence that drives the story forward.

Development began in April 2013, with the team choosing an episodic format for both financial and creative reasons. They traveled to the Pacific Northwest for research, and deliberately subverted character archetypes to create more nuanced personalities. Player feedback on early episodes influenced later ones, keeping the story and character arcs at the forefront. The game received strong reviews, praised for its character development, soundtrack, emotional weight, and the rewind mechanic, though some critics pointed out awkward slang, lip-sync issues, and tonal inconsistencies. It has won over 75 Game of the Year awards and reached 20 million players by November 2023, and is often cited as a landmark example of narrative-driven games. A prequel, Life Is Strange: Before the Storm, arrived in 2017, and a remastered collection followed in 2022. A direct sequel, Life Is Strange: Double Exposure, launched in October 2024, developed by Deck Nine instead of Dontnod.

    Gameplay

Life Is Strange is a third-person graphic adventure focused on narrative immersion. You control Max Caulfield, exploring environments, examining objects, and interacting with characters. The core mechanic is Max's time-rewind ability, which lets you undo and redo choices in conversations and actions. This creates a unique loop: you can experiment with different dialogue options or solutions to puzzles, then rewind to see alternative outcomes. The game features no combat or traditional action sequences; instead, tension comes from the weight of decisions. Photography also plays a role, as you can take optional photos that serve as collectibles and tie into Max's character. The branching narrative tracks your choices and reflects them in later episodes, leading to multiple endings. The game's pacing is deliberately slow, allowing players to soak in the atmosphere of Arcadia Bay and build relationships with the cast.

    Story

Max Caulfield returns to her hometown of Arcadia Bay to attend Blackwell Academy, a prestigious art school. On her first day back, she witnesses a classmate being shot in the school bathroom. In a panic, she discovers she can rewind time and saves the victim, who turns out to be her childhood best friend Chloe Price. The two reunite and begin investigating the mysterious disappearance of Rachel Amber, a popular student who vanished months earlier. As they dig deeper, Max experiences prophetic visions of an impending tornado that threatens to destroy Arcadia Bay. The investigation leads them through dark secrets involving the school's elite, a hidden bunker, and a conspiracy that ties into Rachel's fate. Along the way, Max must navigate her relationships with Chloe, her classmates, and her own guilt over altering time. The narrative culminates in a climactic choice: whether to sacrifice Chloe to save the town or let the tornado destroy Arcadia Bay to keep her alive. This decision, which has become a defining moment in gaming, forces players to weigh the value of a single life against the fate of many. The story is a coming-of-age tale that explores themes of friendship, loss, identity, and the butterfly effect of time travel.
