Overview
Trapped in a dimly lit cabin, you face a shadowy figure known as The Cardman who demands a deadly game of cards. Daniel Mullins Games crafted this experience to blend turn-based strategy with escape room puzzles and psychological horror. You play as a mysterious character named Danny, using a deck of creatures that can be sacrificed to generate bones or summon new allies from an altar. The game shifts between pixel art table scenes, hand-drawn cutscenes, and live-action footage to tell its story.
The narrative begins simply but evolves into a complex mystery involving a cursed deck, a werewolf named Kaycee, and a conspiracy spanning multiple dimensions. Players must solve environmental riddles hidden in the UI and manipulate physical objects within the cabin to progress. The third act shatters expectations by moving the gameplay to a PC terminal interface, challenging how players interact with the medium itself.
Gameplay
The core loop revolves around playing cards against The Cardman while managing resources like bones and souls. Sacrificing creatures yields souls which allow you to upgrade your hand or unlock abilities at an altar. The game is divided into three acts, with the first two focusing on card combat and puzzle-solving inside the cabin. You must find keys, solve clock puzzles, and read a mysterious book to advance.
A free update called Kaycee's Mod released in March 2022 stripped away the narrative layers for pure tactical combat. This mode removes the horror elements and focuses entirely on resource management and risk assessment without the surrounding lore. It offers a streamlined experience for players who want to master the mechanics without the mystery.
Story
Danny wakes up in a cabin where a sinister figure forces him to play a card game to survive. As he wins rounds, he discovers the cards are cursed and contain dark secrets about his past. The plot reveals a connection to a werewolf named Kaycee and a larger conspiracy involving time travel and alternate realities.
The story culminates in a meta-narrative twist where the player realizes they are interacting with a simulation recorded by Kaycee. Files outside the game window hint at a deeper truth, encouraging players to investigate the computer's desktop for clues. This ARG element blends seamlessly with the main campaign to create a unique storytelling experience.
