Hytale
"A sandbox RPG where you build the world and fight its monsters."
Overview
Hytale invites players into Orbis, a vast procedurally generated world where block-based building meets deep role-playing mechanics. Developed by Hypixel Studios, the project blends sandbox creativity with RPG-style combat and exploration, allowing users to craft their own adventures or join community servers that support server-side modding. The studio traces its roots back to 2015 when members of the Hypixel Minecraft team began work on the title, eventually securing funding from Riot Games before the publisher acquired the company in 2020.
The journey took an unexpected turn when Riot Games cancelled development in June 2025, only for original creator Simon Collins-Laflamme to repurchase the studio later that November. He immediately resumed production, leading to an early access launch on January 13, 2026. Players on Windows, macOS, and Linux quickly embraced the game, pushing the player count past one million shortly after release. Regular updates followed, including a preview of the first major content expansion, Chapter 1, in July 2026.
Gameplay
Players construct structures using a voxel system while engaging in combat against creatures through a skill tree and inventory management typical of action RPGs. The engine supports procedural generation for the open world but emphasizes handcrafted dungeons for structured challenges. Server-side modding capabilities allow communities to create custom adventures and rulesets beyond the base game's scope.
Story
In October 2026, the Chapter One update introduced the Gobliterator boss within a handcrafted goblin dungeon. This expansion marked the first time the game featured a proper narrative-driven boss fight alongside new abilities. Developer Simon Collins-Laflamme set up a contest offering $15,000 to the first person to defeat the Gobliterator under strict conditions.
