    Overview

Blizzard Entertainment launched Hearthstone in 2014 as a free-to-play digital collectible card game. Originally subtitled Heroes of Warcraft, it draws on the rich lore, characters, and artifacts of the Warcraft universe. Available on Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android, the game supports cross-platform play. By November 2018, Blizzard reported over 100 million players. Hearthstone also found success as an esport, with Blizzard and other organizers hosting tournaments offering cash prizes.

Gameplay revolves around turn-based matches between two opponents. Each player builds a 30-card deck and selects a hero with a unique power. Mana crystals limit how many cards you can play each turn, whether spells or minions to attack the enemy hero. The goal is to reduce the opponent's health to zero. Winning matches and completing quests earn gold, new cards, and other rewards. Players can buy card packs using gold or real money to strengthen their collections. Modes include casual and ranked play, the Arena draft mode, and solo adventures. New card sets and mechanics arrive through expansion packs.

Hearthstone started as an experimental project from a small team within Blizzard, sparked by the company's appreciation for collectible card games. The designers aimed to avoid pitfalls common in digital card games by preventing opponents from acting during a player's turn and by mimicking the tactile feel of physical cards through the UI. Many concepts and art assets were adapted from the earlier World of Warcraft Trading Card Game.

    Gameplay

Each Hearthstone match is a 1-vs-1 turn-based battle. Players start with a 30-card deck and a hero representing one of eleven Warcraft classes. The hero has a unique hero power costing 2 mana. At the start, players draw an initial hand and may mulligan any number of cards. The first player draws 3 cards, the second draws 4 plus The Coin, a spell that grants a temporary mana crystal.

Mana crystals are the core resource. Each turn, the active player gains one permanent mana crystal up to a maximum of 10, and all spent crystals refresh. Cards cost mana to play. Minions are creatures that attack enemies or the opponent's hero. Spells have one-shot effects. Weapons equip to the hero, granting attack and durability. Locations are activatable supports. Hero cards transform the hero into a more powerful form. The defending player has no control over which minions are attacked, a deliberate design choice to simplify the digital experience.

Hearthstone offers several modes. Play mode includes Casual and Ranked constructed play, with seasonal ladders and rewards. Arena is a draft mode where players pick cards from random triads, aiming for up to 12 wins before 3 losses. Duels is a hybrid where players start with a 16-card deck, choose a hero power and Signature Treasure, and face opponents. Battlegrounds is an 8-player auto-battler with recruitment and combat phases. Solo Adventures provide PvE boss fights and puzzles. The game uses a freemium model: gold from quests and wins buys packs, while real money purchases accelerate collection building.

    Story

Hearthstone does not follow a single narrative. Set in the Warcraft universe, it uses characters, spells, and locations as flavor for cards and boards. Many expansions and solo adventures tell self-contained stories. For example, Curse of Naxxramas adapts the Warcraft raid, League of Explorers sends players on archaeological adventures, and Rise of Shadows kicks off the Year of the Dragon storyline. Solo adventures feature boss fights with dialogue and light plots that parody or retell Warcraft lore.

The framing device is simple: innkeepers and patrons play a friendly card game in taverns. Warcraft lore appears as flavor text, art, and character identities, but there is no unified plot progression. The game's tone is lighthearted and humorous, with cards often referencing in-jokes and pop culture.
