GoldenEye 007
"A reimagining of the classic spy thriller."
Overview
Eurocom built its 2010 GoldenEye 007 as a reimagining of both the 1995 Bond film and Rare's 1997 Nintendo 64 shooter, not a straight remaster. Daniel Craig steps in as Bond, replacing Pierce Brosnan, and the story gets updated gadgets, a reworked script by screenwriter Bruce Feirstein, and a darker tone. The Wii version arrived in November 2010, the same month as Activision's other Bond title, Blood Stone. A Nintendo DS edition handled by n-Space shipped alongside it.
Gameplay sticks to first-person shooting with a heavy emphasis on stealth and cover. You sneak through Soviet-era facilities, use a smartphone to hack cameras and doors, and switch between silenced and loud approaches depending on the situation. The Wii remote and nunchuk control scheme drew praise for feeling precise, and the split-screen multiplayer brings back classic modes like License to Kill with modern tweaks. A full online mode rounded out the package.
Critics responded well, calling it a return to form for Bond games. Reviews singled out the campaign pacing, voice work, and multiplayer suite, even if it never quite matched the nostalgia of the N64 original. A year later, Eurocom's enhanced port GoldenEye 007: Reloaded brought the game to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with sharper visuals and extra content.
Gameplay
The core loop balances stealth and direct combat across twenty campaign missions. Players navigate Soviet-era locations like dams and submarine bases while managing resources and avoiding detection. The smartphone gadget allows hacking of security systems to bypass enemies or open paths. Cover mechanics let players take protection behind walls during firefights. The Wii version used motion controls for aiming, offering a unique feel compared to standard analog stick inputs on console versions.
Mission objectives vary from silent takedowns to loud assaults. Difficulty levels adjust enemy aggression and resource availability. The Reloaded version added new weapons and maps to the existing roster. Character customization options expanded in the online mode, letting players equip different gear before matches.
Story
James Bond investigates a rogue Russian faction following the events of Casino Royale. The plot diverges from the 1995 film by focusing on a criminal syndicate planning to use a satellite weapon called GoldenEye. Bond infiltrates facilities to stop the launch of this system. The narrative includes high-tech hacking scenes and a grittier atmosphere than previous adaptations. Mission sequences take place in diverse environments ranging from icy landscapes to underwater bases.
Key characters include Bond, M, and various antagonists tied to the Russian government. The story progresses through linear mission structures with cutscenes explaining the context. Dialogue features Daniel Craig's voice performance, bringing a more serious tone to the character. The ending reveals the fate of the satellite weapon and the rogue operators.
