God of War Laufey
"A new adventure begins in the afterlife."
Overview
God of War Laufey is a mainline entry in the God of War series developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment exclusively for PlayStation 5. For the first time in the franchise's 21-year history, players do not control Kratos but instead take on the role of Laufey, also known as Faye, Kratos's wife and mother to Atreus. The game is set in the Everywhen, the afterlife of the gods, where Faye must fight to protect the plans she left behind for her family.
Combat emphasizes speed, control, and aerial mobility, with Faye wielding magical sword swings and performing juggling combos. Her soul-manipulating powers are amplified in the Everywhen, a realm steeped in ancient magic. The game features a cosmic cube companion named Phranque, voiced by Jack Quaid, and an enchanted ribbon named Rue, voiced by Perlina Lau. Deborah Ann Woll voices Laufey. The narrative runs parallel to the events of God of War (2018), exploring Faye's perspective as a Jötunn warrior and protector of the giants.
Gameplay
Combat in God of War Laufey builds on the modern God of War foundation while injecting elements from the Greek-era games. Faye's fighting style is defined by speed and aerial mobility, allowing her to transition seamlessly between ground and air. She wields magical sword swings and can perform aerial juggling combos, a stark contrast to Kratos's heavy slams. Her increased mobility adds offensive and defensive tools, and her soul-related abilities are amplified in the Everywhen. The game also introduces a cosmic cube companion named Phranque and an enchanted ribbon named Rue, who assist in combat and exploration.
Story
Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey, a new adventure begins. Awakening unexpectedly in the Everywhen after her funeral, Faye discovers that the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus are at risk. To save her family, she must fight through the afterlife of the gods, where ruthless gods from various mythologies vie for power. The Everywhen is the birthplace and endpoint of all magic, a land overflowing with dangerous power. The story runs parallel to the events at the start of God of War (2018), revealing Faye's role as the Golden Hand of the Jötnar and her connection to the Leviathan Axe.
