Final Fantasy VII Remake
"A reimagining of the classic RPG set in the sprawling metropolis of Midgar."
Overview
Cloud Strife arrives in Midgar as a mercenary with a past, only to find himself entangled with AVALANCHE and their crusade against the Shinra Corporation. This 2020 release by Square Enix transforms the original 1997 narrative into a real-time action experience where players must dodge, weave, and manage an Active Time Battle gauge rather than relying on turn-based commands. The story expands significantly beyond the city limits of the source material, exploring themes of destiny and corporate corruption while introducing new characters and subplots.
The game runs on a heavily modified version of the Luminous Engine, allowing for high-fidelity graphics and seamless transitions between exploration and combat. While the core plot follows the group's escape from Midgar, the development team added layers of metaphysical depth through entities known as Whispers that enforce the original timeline. This approach revitalized the franchise for a new generation while maintaining enough fidelity to satisfy long-time fans.
Gameplay
Combat operates on a hybrid system where Cloud moves in real-time while party members Tifa Lockhart, Barret Wallace, and Aerith Gainsborough execute commands issued by the player. Battles require constant movement to avoid attacks and precise timing to fill the ATB gauge for special abilities or magic. Players switch weapons to exploit enemy weaknesses and utilize a Bravery system introduced later in the game to enhance damage output.
Story
A former soldier turned mercenary joins the eco-terrorist group AVALANCHE to stop Shinra from draining the planet's life force via Mako reactors. The narrative diverges from the original by expanding the scope within Midgar and introducing the Whispers, spectral beings that attempt to restore events to their destined course. The climax sees the group escaping the city after destroying a reactor, setting up the broader trilogy while leaving the fate of several characters ambiguous compared to the 1997 version.
