    Overview

The Commonwealth lies in ruins, a scarred landscape where Boston once stood. Fallout 4 drops players into this wasteland as the Sole Survivor, emerging from Vault 111 after twenty years of cryogenic sleep to find their spouse murdered and infant son stolen by raiders. This personal tragedy anchors the narrative as you traverse a world fractured by nuclear war, navigating conflicts between factions like the Institute, the Brotherhood of Steel, the Railroad, and the Minutemen.

Bethesda Game Studios built this experience on the Creation Engine, refining the technology behind The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim with improved lighting and volumetric fog. The game launched on November 10, 2015, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Sales figures climbed rapidly, moving over 12 million copies in just three days. A later port arrived on the Nintendo Switch 2 in February 2026 as the Anniversary Edition, bundling all downloadable content for that platform.

Gameplay revolves around the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attribute system and a perk chart that unlocks abilities as characters level up. Combat blends real-time shooting with V.A.T.S., a turn-based targeting mode that lets players pause time to aim at specific body parts. A defining addition is the settlement building system, which allows players to construct bases, assign scavengers, and defend against raids using the Workshop interface.

    Gameplay

Players manage character growth through seven core attributes: Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck. Leveling up grants Perk Points that unlock specialized skills ranging from weapon proficiency to stealth capabilities. The combat system offers flexibility between direct firefights and the tactical V.A.T.S. mode, which calculates hit percentages based on current stats and enemy armor.

A significant portion of gameplay involves establishing settlements across the map. Using the Workshop mode, users gather resources like wood, steel, and copper to build structures, place turrets, and create water purifiers. These settlements require defense against periodic attacks, adding a layer of resource management to the exploration loop.

    Story

The narrative begins in 2287 when the player character wakes in Vault 111. An immediate tragedy occurs as Raiders kill the spouse and abduct the baby son named Shaun. The protagonist pursues the kidnappers into the Commonwealth, discovering that the Institute, a group of scientists living underground, has been creating synths to infiltrate surface society.

Throughout the journey, the Sole Survivor must choose sides among four major factions. The Brotherhood of Steel seeks to destroy advanced technology, while the Railroad aims to free synths from Institute control. The Minutemen represent a grassroots militia focused on helping settlers. Each faction path leads to different endings that determine the future of the Commonwealth.
